I just won this Iberian in auction. Not an easy one to find in good condition. I was so worried I would get outbid , I guess it helped that not as many people are as excited about an Iberian coin as me. Spain, Sexi Æ Unit. Circa 200-150 BC. Head of Herakles left, wearing lion skin headdress, club over shoulder / Two tunny fish to left; aleph above, crescent below, Neo-Punic legend "MP'LSKS" within central frame. ACIP 819-20; SNG BM Spain 415. 13.06g, 26mm, 12h. Very Fine. Rare. From the Amilcare Collection.
Very nice new Iberian! Anyone know much about this collection? There's some cool coins in it. And Amilcare reminds me lots of Hamilcar... Appropriate for the apparent collection focus.
I'm interested!...Super coin...Lovely rendition of the lion skin headdress...In fact the coin has nice detail in general...A really nice pick up.. http://moneda-hispanica.com/iberia.htm Paul
As a coincidence, today at an annual coin fair I bought this nice Spaniard. Iberia, Kontrebia Karbika, AE unit (‘As’). After 133 BC. Obv. Head r., left a text, right an animal (dolphin?). Rev. Rider on a lively horse, text in exergue. 22.5 mm, 9.13 gr.
Magnificent style and art! I identified mine as a Gades... Though in the condition it's in it may as well be a McDonald's moon man and two French fries:
@Pellinore that one is not an easy one to find. You see a lot of the same style but not from Kontrebia Karbika ! I only have one in this style and it just happens to be from the same place !
@dougsmit @Ryro When I would metal detect in Spain I was pretty close to this settlement of Gades and found a bunch of them. the only problem was that they were cast planchets and then struck so they had a lot of porosity or air holes and were very prone to corrosion and bronze disease. So finding a good was not easy at all. I have two of these one has some kind of a counterstamp , also have some of the smaller types in size.
Ok @Bing you have got some nice ones also , I think the bottom one is a barbaric imitation of a Castulo semis . I have one of the regular and the barbaric.
@Bing I love your large Castulo coin, I have two like yours and a really large one on its way in the mail that weighs 36 grams here it is. This one in the here is 34 grams and my other one is 26 grams. Castulo Ancient Spain Celtiberian 2nd Century BC. Dupondius. Obv: Diademed and beardless male head right Rev: Sphinx right star before Iberian legend KaSTiLO. CNH pg. 331, 7 , Burgos 694 34.23 grams
@bcuda .....Beginning to see what a lovely collection you've acquired....You have some great coins! Here's a few of mine.... Castulo, Spain AE As. 30 mm, 22g. 76-45 BC. ISCER SACAL, youthful male head right. CAST SOCED, sphinx right. Burgos (2008) 709; Ripolles 905; Villaronga 14. Iberic Spain, Sekaisa. AE23, early 1st century BC. Obverse..Youthful male head right between two dolphins. Reverse..Celtiberian legend SEKAISA beneath horseman galloping right, holding spear. Ripolles 1569; Burgos (1987), 699. Villaronga 39; Spain, Bolskan (Osca). Circa 150-100 BC. AE Unit (10.35 gm, 24mm). Obverse: Bearded head right; dolphin behind. @Spaniard you have some very nice Iberian coins and thank you for your kind post. I don't have any of the coins you posted but I have been looking at a few Bolskan coins. Just waiting for the right one at the right price. the majority of my collection is Iberian or second punic war coins. I am seriously thinking about not collecting anything else and possibly selling off my others.
