The two bumps on the reverse above the dome you can actually physically feel with your finger, so I’m fairly certain they have been there since the coin was struck. Someone suggested it could be a henning nickel which is interesting since I am in New Jersey, any ideas?
I think it's just LDS late dis state. But you'll have to weight the coin to make sure. It should weigh more than 5.2 grams to give it any potential.
I see you started a new thread. I’m in agreement on a need to weigh your nickel. A jewelry or coin store will do that
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Mark webster ! Just because you can feel the bumps with your finger doesn't mean that they came from the Mint that way. For all you know, it could be a couple drops of glue. ~ Chris
I would disagree with Chris. I have come across a few nickels with the same or similiar bumps. They are part of the field. To me I believe this is from LDS or possibly a damaged die.
@Mark webster I posted in your other thread, but will do so here for good measure. We will need better photos to make a better judgement. Shooting from the hip, I suspect that those marks are the result of rust spots on the die that were removed prior to coining. These marks are generally in the fields and eat into the die face. This would account for a raised bump on the coin. As others have noted (here and in the other thread), Henning nickels tend to be very mushy. My Henning weighs the same as a regular nickel, so while it can be a useful diagnostic, it's not absolute. We are looking for a loop in the R in PLURIBUS or a dot above the left side of the Monticello. Because your coin doesn't have the loop and the obverse looks pretty crisp, we are probably looking at a worn 1946 nickel with some anomaly in the field, perhaps caused by rust. But if I were you...I'd explore this further. So post the pictures and let's see what we conclude.
Thanks a lot everybody this is very helpful, I have a scale at home and will post the weight along with hopefully better photos.
Ok so it weighs 4.6g so that answers that. But I will post more pics I tried doing it like you said by resting the phone on something but they still aren’t great sorry in advance.
Ok I just did it with that same setup and a slightly better phone so these pics are the best I can get until I get a scope.
@Mark webster Have a look at this marker: does your coin have it? I can see something above the left gate area of the Montello. Do you clearly see that on your coin?
No Kevin it does not have that mark, it is surely not a Henning nickel so thanks for helping me rule that out.
Wait actually do you mean the little dot? Because it does have that, you can even kind of see it in the pictures I posted.
