Is another silver dollar coming out this year?

For as long as I could remember - the mint has always released at least two silver comm designs each year. (Actually, just went back and looked and the last time the mint released a solo silver dollar was in 2003 when the First Flight 3 coins series came out. Then from 1990 back to 1986 only one silver dollar was released each year.) Does anyone know if there will be a second design released this year and is a half or gold piece expected as well? A search of the mint's website didn't yeild anything and there is nothing in the upcoming products section either. Thanks.

I have been wondering that myself!! I try to track all the commems from the thomas.gov site. So far all i got down for this year was the Bald Eagle.. i was wondering if i missed somethign somewhere. other possibles for this year are -Old man In the Mountain Coin, NASA and JPL 50th Anniversory and the Celia Cruz coin .... all three have legislation for them, but so far, none have been passed.

for 2009 i have the Louis Braille coin as being passed as well as the Abraham Lincoln Coins
2009 possibles - Dr Martin Luther King, Revolutionary War of 1812 Batlefields

and 2010 i have the American Veterans Disable For Life coin as being passed
2010 possibles - Washington national Opera coin and a Model T coin.

I could have missed a few here or there, but these are the ones i have listed for now.

you are right elaine, they only ISSUE 2 per year, but there are a handfull legislated for each year. Its only after they pass can they be issued. Take next year for example... there will be how many? The louis Braille and the newly reported Solar System coins... those might not be (or might be) commem coins, but they talked about issuing silver coins for each planet (sounds like a commem to me). if that is so, thats 9 right there. So there 'could' be 10 commems next year.... or more

Some might argue the 9 planet coins is 1 program, just like the Ben Franklin commem coins had the 2 designs and yet counted as 1 commem.

To me, thats just plain ALOT of coins. Im having trouble enough keeping up with everything i want, and they keep throwing out new products. :(

    that's right

i stopped buying modern commems in 1994. i missed the 1995 - 1996 olympics. then i bought the benjamin franklin recently. it did went up a lot. but now buying price is somewhere around mint issued price. i will keep buying american eagle gold and silver series.

Ok, just got done reading an article in Coin World about the 2008 50th anniversary of NASA coin set and we may have a whole bunch of comm coins coming out soon.

Here are some key points of the article:
    1. Orders for the coins will be accepted from Jan1 - Dec31 2008, with the minting and issuance ending Dec 31, 2009. So most likely, orders will be taken for coins that say 2008, but will be delievered in 2009.
    2. 1st $50 gold comm since 1915
    3. 9 silver dollars, 1 gold $50
    4. PROOF only! No UNC issues. Whew! That saves a lot of money. First time since 1982 that a UNC (business strike) version comm has not been offered.
    5. Gold coin will be of high relief quality.
    6. Mintages would be max 50,000 gold and not more than 300,000 silver dollars of each of nine specified designs.

I hate to burst your bubble, but officially there are now only 8 planets. Pluto has been demoted to "Dwarf Planet" status.

Yes, true, but the mint.... according to the article in Coin World...., is still honoring the dwarf planet and will be recongnized as such.

Just a question follow-up to my original question.... or more something to ponder. Do you think that the reason the mint isn't saying whether or not they will release a second comm coin this year because they are waiting to find out whether or not the NASA series will pass? The article in coin world does mention that although the set will probably come out in 2009, the coins will be dated 2008 and be sold during the current year - therefore, this would be the "second" comm set released this year.

The mint can be spontaneous at times...remember the 2006 25th aniversary silver/gold eagle sets?....released with a minimum of fanfare and gone just as quickley. The only ones who knew that this issue was being released were the people who checked the mint web site on a regular basis. It's possible they could sneak a second silver dollar in this year without publicly announcing it....we'll see.

Possibly.....I think the mint has left this open. I think it all comes down to when the mint gets the approval to mint the coins. The way I understood the article was that the mint has the authority to take orders from Jan 1 2008 to Dec 31 2008. The coins will have 2008 on them, but wouldn't be shipped out until 2009. I will try to do some more research this weekend.

The mint has done this a few times over the past several years. You are right about checking the mint site regularly. I check it nearly on a daily basis.

They CAN"T say whether there will be a second commem this year because they have no control over whether or not there will be one. If Congress passes the NASA bill in it's present form there will be one. If they don't there probably won't be.

But if they don't hurry up, and they DO vote for the NASA coin it will be a 2008 coins that is completely struck and marketed in 2009. Of course it won't be the first time they have celebrated an anniversary in some other year than the one the anniversary took place in.

I also light how the legislation says that even though these would be struck in 2009, they don't count aagainst the "only two commemorative coin programs per year" law. so it doesn't interfere with the Lincoln and Braile Dollars.
