Anyone else collect tokens from the Hudson's Bay Company? I'm working on this small set of four pieces from the Eastmain District: 1 MB, 1/2 MB, 1/4 MB, and 1/8 MB. I'm now only missing the 1 Made Beaver piece.
raingoat .. pls PM me via this site or CaC or CCF. One of my friends stays off the coin sites now, but I have his contact info if you get in touch with me and I'll get it to you.
For Hudson's Bay, MB means "made beaver". A "made beaver" was one adult beaver pelt in pristine condition. These brass tokens were exchanged for beaver pelts with the trappers and tribes. ALL of these tokens are/were scarce and mostly used in the area South and East of Hudson Bay and North of the "Province of Canada".
For those of you scratching their heads about what was a "made beaver", here is a little info: http://www.hbcheritage.ca/history/fur-trade/standard-of-trade
And if you notice the reverse of the token actually says "NB," which was essentially a typo. The engraver made a mistake, but they just used the dies and struck the tokens with the error. All of the Eastmain District pieces have this error.
