Grade This Jefferson Nickel...should be a fun one

    As I said in the beginning, it's possible. But look at the rest of the coin, and realize that not all damage to the rim of a coin starts at the rim and moves inward. Sometimes it starts near the center and moves outward. The hits and their severity on the reverse indicates that this could be exactly what happened to this coin. Those aren't just bag marks. And whatever made them appears as if it may have been moving towards the rim and when it hit the rim it just tore a chunk out of it.

    Now I could be completely wrong, but I could be right too. Double click on the pic and look at it.

    NGC graded the coin MS63. That might be a bit on the high side, but I think the planchet flaw might have bumped it up a bit. I have no idea what this coin is worth though. I bought it because I liked it and because 1985 is my birth year.

    doug, you definately saw dings I didn't. If those aren't bag marks are you suggesting that it's been altered?

    Those were the same marks I noted in my first post. I assumed they were bag marks but thought it was odd to have so many when the Obverse was pretty clean. Interesting theory GD.

    Not at all, I suspect it was damaged somehow after it left the mint.

    Looks like a ms 60 to me. I would like it just for the color. I have several nickles with some copper wash on them.

    Someone may have hit the rim with a file to see if it was copper all the way through or just on the surface?

    I considered that myself, but if you look closely the gouge in the rim is jagged, not smooth like the mark from a file would be.
