I have seen very few coins from this small but historically important country. Here's one from 1768. (4 Tari, Emmanuel Pinto) The strike is quite a bit off center. If anyone else has coins from Malta to share, please do!
Order of Malta, 1637 2 Tari KM#65. Countermarked as follows: 1. Double Headed Eagle 1646 3. Head of John the Baptist 1662 4. Crowned Fleur-de-lys 1696
The medieval order known by several titles including the Order of Saint John and the Knights Hospitaller administered the Mediterranean island of Malta from 1530 to 1798.
I collect Sicilian coins from the 1600's-1800's and when I'm looking on Ebay, Maltese coins pop up when I search for "Tari" coins. Sicilian silver coins were called Tari and Malta apparently used the same name for their silver coins. And Malta is close to Sicily.
Order of Malta, This coin was bought a long time ago for my "Coins with Insects" collection. I have not seen another 1 of these up for sale. Any information on this coin would be great. Silver (.986) Is the man fighting the grasshopper ??
I would guess it is a locust, as they are known for mass swarming and destroying crops. Thus the world food day link. Numista says it's a locust too.
