This the newest member of my family, although not sure if it's a medal or a coin. Catalog of the worlds most popular coins says it's a coin (of outstanding interest), but obv/rev both have the same end as top.

Seated King of Thule blesses two children.
The denomination for this 45mm or 45.5mm silver coin (10 Kronur) appears on the edge.
It was minted as a private contract instigated by a parliamentary committee of the Icelandic `Althing' (parliament) by the Saxony State Mint at Muldenhutten or Dresden Germany (2 differing sources of info. probably the saxony mint.)to commemorate 1,000 years of the `Althing'. It is referenced in Krause Mischler as KM-M3, but I don't have this ref. book.

Interesting design indeed. From that series, I like the 2 kronur piece best, but this one is neat too. Don't have any of them though ...

Hard to tell whether these are coins or medals - the Schön catalog says they were government issued medals with the option to be made legal tender. I see them in the coins camp, but other people's MMV. :) Saxony's state mint was in Dresden until 1887 and then moved to Muldenhütten near Freiberg. Since these Icelandic pieces were made in 1930, they are from Muldenhütten.

Thanks, i like it alot too. The world coin book/catalog i got fell open to this page right after I picked it up to put it away. Closed the book and put it away, but could not stop thinking about it. Next day I had to search through 3 catalogs to find it again. It's only in the one catalog in my possesion. Searched ebay, called around(only 1 shop had seen one and that was 10 yrs. ago!), translated ebay from spanish and there it was.
chrisild, I could have gotten all three 2,5,10kronur for 8% off if I got them all but alas, the 2 was already gone so I just got this one. BTW what does MMV mean ? "coins camp, but other people's MMV"

Ah well, if you could not get the 2 kr piece this time, maybe you can buy it a little later. In the meantime enjoy the one you bought. :thumb: As for that MMV, you may have seen the acroynm "YMMV" ( = your mileage may vary). Just wanted to point out that in some cases it is difficult to draw a strict dividing line (here coins, there medals). This is one of those cases, I think.

this is a strictly a medal and a nice looking one at that.

"Under a law on the celebration of the millennium of the Althing in 1930 the government was permitted to issue a set of medals with embossed value. The law stipulated that the medals could be given validity as legal tender by a royal decree. This provision was never carried into effect."
