It was 20 bucks. My first one. Threw in the bid with a few hours to go. Mine was the only bid. It only received a total of 38 views. Am I missing something? I know the one A looks beat up but otherwise, it was exactly what I was looking for. I just wanted a halfway decent 1864. I think I paid about what it's worth.
Appears to have taken a light cleaning in the past but the detail is nice. You did just fine for $20. Congrats!
Thanks a lot guys. Yeah, it may have been cleaned at one point. I couldn't really tell. Figured for 20 bucks, I'll take the gamble. I like it. I was just surprised there weren't more people looking at it or anybody bidding. It did go during the middle of the day on a Wednesday though. Might have had something to do with it. Intercept shield holders for it arrived today 'in case' I won it. Well, just thought I'd share.
That is a nice coin with great detail. Please don't get angry, but I believe that coin has been recolored, and that's why it didn't get more interest. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. ON the bright side, the price you paid wasn't bad....Mike
Sorry, but I agree with Leadfoot. It looks like it has been messed around with. But still has really nice details
Hmm. Never considered that. It could be. Could you explain what makes you think it's been re-colored? I'm curious to learn. I'll take a couple pics once I get it and post them here. It does look bright for the wear. I'll have to see it in person.
It looks like some one has cleaned it, and then try to hide it by re-coloring it. I do not know how to explain it, I have just know from experience. If you look at it in a way, it looks like there has been added an extra layer of color, and it is shiny/glossy looking. Do you see what I mean?
I'm not sure about re-colored but it has taken a cleaning. The "devices" as in nooks and crannies are too clean for starters. Color is too light. Should be a darker brown for the grade. Basically not seeing "good original dirt".
I agree. It should be darker for the grade. Despite whatever has happened to it, I'd buy it again. I just wanted one. I've looked at many and never could find one I liked. The WE is worn off most of them and that was part of my criteria. I at least wanted it distinguishable. Without having to pay several hundred dollars for it. Seems like every one I've seen is either all or nothing.
All depends on your budget no doubt. That and these can become addictive believe me. I figure that I have at least 60 of them now.
So, you mean "it just looks recolored" isn't enough? Your coin has obvious high-point wear but its color is too even. Circulated copper should have more contrast between the worn parts and unworn (i.e more protected) areas. Like this: Always be wary when you see a circulated piece of old copper with an even coloration -- as it is generally a sign of recoloring.... Your coin also has the telltale hue of Dellers Darkener (an agent to add color back to cleaned copper) -- which is the other thing that tipped me off. Again, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. For $20 you didn't do too bad, and in the end the only thing that matters is if YOU like the coin...Mike
I think you did just fine. You have a nice obsolete coin with lots of detail. Sure, it's been cleaned but it has plenty of detail for you to study and learn from. Down the road you can buy a better one and sell this one to someone looking for a cheap Two Center. I don't think you will lose much, if any, money on the deal. Enjoy your new coin.
Thanks for the info LF. I will definitely keep an eye out for that stuff in the future. That's something I should have known but didn't. I don't know much about copper coins. Like Hobo says, I may upgrade someday and who knows. Maybe give it away as a gift or put it up for a contest prize here. I'd buy it again, but I'm glad I didn't pay anymore for it.
If you'd buy it again , then one thing is sure , you didn't make a mistake , liking your coins is the most important thing , plus you learned something for the future . Now you can help others . rzage:smile:hatch::hammer:
