I just found out about this site the other day and i wanted to know what one of my coins were worth. I heard that this coin was worth a bit of money.the coin is of the attached pictures below. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance
There are 2 varieties of silver dollar in 1966. The "small beads" variety is very rare and so far has only appeared in uncirculated condition. It's difficult to tell from your picture but the coin appears to be circulated so it's most likely to be the "large beads" variety with a value of only a few dollars. Bill
Bill,I think that the 'large beads' & 'small beads' Voyageur $1's is the 1965,not 1966.Please can you look up in Charlton to confirm this? Aidan.
There were large and small beads in both years. Small beads in 1965 do not affect value much but the 1966 is worth thousands. Bill
The 1966 Small Beads variety came about when a 1965 Small Beads obverse was paired with a 1966 dated reverse in error. The March 2005 COIN PRICES magazine lists mintage at 485 coins. Retail values listed are $750 XF, $1000 AU, $1350 MS60 and $1550 MS63. This is in $US. AIDAN: the 1965 loonie came in 5 varieties according to Charlton: Small Beads, pointed 5 Small Beads, blunt 5 Medium Beads, pointed 5 Large Beads, pointed 5 Large Beads, blunt 5 Also, I could not find any references to a "flat field" for the 1967 $1. This seems to have been limited to the early 1965 coins but was eliminated with the introduction of the raised edge coins - Medium & Large Bead varieties.
I know I am being technical here. But the term "Loonie" only applies to the Canadian dollar coins from 1987 to present because of the Loon on it. The coin you have posted is a "Voyageur dollar" or simply "Canadian Silver Dollar"
The "flat fields" 1967 $1 was a early trial strike, so isn't even technically a circualtion coin, really.
Ccgnum, the Flat Fields 1967 $1 is listed in 'Coins of Canada' by R.C. Willey & J.A. Haxby.I think that it may be listed in Charlton.Could any Canadian member please confirm by posting a picture from the Charlton catalogue with prices. Aidan.
Canadian 1967 silver $1. Bohica, the 1967 Canadian silver $1 has got a Canada goose on it,as the coin commemorates the Centenary of Confederation. As a collector of British Commonwealth coins, banknotes & postal orders,Canadian coins are of strong interest to me.
Bill,I am very surprised,as I thought that Charlton would look up in 'Coins of Canada' & put his own prices on it. Aidan.
Ccgnum, well the Flat Fields $1's are very well known to collectors, along with the Arnpriors, especially to those who own a copy of 'Coins of Canada' in any edition.Mine's a battered 3rd Edition.Bill has informed me that he has got the 20th Edition. Aidan.
I'm in Vancouver, and most people I know are aware of its existance, but would not bother to look for it since the mintage is virtually nil. The flat fields 1967 $1 in terms of being known lags far behind the Arnpriors. There's a reason why Charlton doesn't list it.
1966 large and small beads As I recently read in a coin publication, the Large/Small bead variety on the 1966 dollars can quickly and easily be spotted using the simple "pointer" technique. Large Beads: The A in Regina points directly to a bead. Small Beads: The A in Regina points between the beads. The coin in the first thread is a Large Bead variety.
ok it's a real Coin. Our family have 2coins of the 1967 Large bead... another guy from my city(St-Jean-sur-Richelieu...South shore of Montreal) post something on the net looking for a price value. He didn't get any answer .. but i can tell you that these coins exist. We are at least two in this country to posses thoses coins.. 100% positive. I may post some Picture for you someday!
