Is it less expensive to send an NGC for crossover to PCGS? Is that better than just getting a PCGS graded coin?
I've had my best luck Crossing NGC coins over to PCGS whenever they're having their quarterly specials. Or when I put "any grade "on the paperwork. Most coins crossover the same grade or one grade higher. I've had very few coins down grade. I like the photos that PCGS take that's why I cross over. I also like the little coin album you can put them in. If anything I've had less success Crossing PCGS to NGC. NGC the last year or two has been very tough grading. I think they're loosening up a little.
I think the crossover game was more important when PCGS had better-looking and better slabs. The NGC ones that totally enacsed the coin were not visually friendly. I don't think that's the case today. Especially on moderns (which I realize many don't buy), NGC has great-looking slabs.
This is off base but I don't really have the energy to get dragged into this. Go look at the actual market especially nicer coins and yes top pop moderns as well and it becomes clear as day
Oh I don't doubt that PCGS command a premium -- definitely. But years ago when the slab itself was the problem even getting the same grade from PCGS would increase the value. Those white-circle NGC slabs that totally surrounded the coin -- hideous !
Based on my experience, I agree wholeheartedly with this. By the way, I was a fan of certification and third-party grading for several years before PCGS began in 1986 and NGC in 1987. Actually, at first I was just a fan of the certification; the grading aspect came later.
I've had it go both ways... submitting NGC-graded gold that crossed at the same grade, while others (I would say the @ equal numbers) have not. Two examples which come to mind - I purchased the 1799 HE in an NGC XF40 holder, tried to cross at grade, and succeeded. I agree with the grade, due to its level of wear, and have left it at that: Now take this 1808 HE. I purchased it in an NGC AU-55 holder and tried unsuccessfully to cross it to PCGS - DNC. I retried to cross at any grade, and PCGS graded it AU-53. I agree more with the PCGS AU-53 grade as it has a little too much wear for a full AU-55 grade. CAC seems to agree also. I will add that from personal experiences, and the many, many coins I've examined at shows and auctions, that NGC consistently grades classic gold more loosely than PCGS. Not that PCGS isn't guilty of it also, but I've walked large bourse floors, observing tables upon tables of NGC-slabbed gold that is either over-graded or over "processed" (i.e., shouldn't have been straight-graded to begin with) or both, with the number of said gold in PCGS-graded coins being much smaller. I'm not a kool-aid drinker of either company, but my 30 years of experience in the early & branch mint gold areas have taught me that I'm more likely to agree with PCGS's grade, than NGC's.
Many years ago, 10+, I used to play the crossover game. Lost more than I won. Probably because I was somewhat new to the whole thing around grading coins. Here was one success: A Mark Goodman image. Now I buy the coin I need or want already in the holder.
I would say that from the end of the 1990's/early 2000's on, NGC's grading of early & branch mint gold has been looser than PCGS's. Prior to that, both services were grading more consistently on par with each other.
@WingedLiberty. I used the number 71095819 on the PCGS verification service. What came up was a 1998 SAE graded MS69 but the coin looked completely different than the one you posted. Could it possibly be a counterfeit slab? https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1998-1-silver-eagle/9929/69 https://www.pcgs.com/cert/71095819 Click on view this coin in coinfacts.
I would go broke playing crossover game. I just leave as is unless crackout which I then submit raw to Pcgs.
I'll say it looks completely different, because the certificate verification site doesn't HAVE a picture of the coin. When you click on "View this coin on Coinfacts" it just takes you to the coin facts page for that TYPE, not the specific coin listed on the verification page. I also don't know if WingedLiberty is still here. He started the thread and posted that image 9 years ago.
