Sure, they don't have to take the blame for anything that they didn't do. But I ask you, you say that like you think Congress is not to blame and the mint really is. But the facts are, the law written by Congress tells the mint how much profit they have to make. The mint has no choice in the matter.

I think some of the biggest blame that we could lay on our congress people are for the things they didn't do, like fix social security..... They are crooks for the most part.

As far as the mint goes I can't understand why they wouldn't want to make money off of collectibles? I mean come on they are like a souvenir shop...

If you don't like the mint just buy mint products in the secondary market.

I can buy proof modern commems all day for 16 -20 bucks a piece slabbed PF 69 & MS 69 . Granted silver was cheaper in the past but the recent commems are no different. You don't have to purchase directly from the mint. Nobody forces your hand....
The way some of these 90% silver state quarters sell in the after market one would almost think that the mint isn't giving you such a shabby deal. I see some of those 5 coin year sets selling for like 80 bucks slabbed by NGC. I would never pay those prices if I wanted those coins.... I would just by the mint sets... They are a better deal.

Proof Gold and Silver Eagles are also not that bad of a deal if you are into that type of thing. The gold eagles especially come in pretty nice holders. Personally I think some of their prices are pretty reasonable, but if you chase after everything they have you might get a raw deal overall. Some stuff you should purchase in the secondary market, and other stuff from the mint.

My personal advice would be to stay away from the mint altogether because most everything you get from them is produced in such large quantities that it is worthless from a numismatic standpoint. That is not always true, but by in large I think you will not see your money appreciate when you purchase mint products. Lets face it... the government debases the currency constantly, so to pay a premium for it has to be one of the worst investments going.

    BQ,
You make some great points. I equate this to the baseball card industry. When we were kids, you went to the store everytime you got some change, and bought a pack of Topps. If you bought enough, you could collect the whole set pretty easily. Then along came Donruss, Upper Deck, and a whole slew of other companies offering standard sets, stadium sets, etc. It became impossible to keep up and collect "everything". So, I just decided to keep it simple, and buy myself a complete set of regular old Topps sets each year. Same with the Mint, they're going overboard with all the new products, but I'll stick to buying proof sets like I always have.
