Quite a haul - the jugate busts of the Ptolemaic kingdom are the cat's meow. Nice coins, esp. the light aureus or fractional gold of Gallienus.
All are terrific examples and I'd have any one of them in my collection. But that is one heck of a bellybutton on Hadrian!!!!!!
WOW! All are magnificent Terence. My favourites are the Ptolemy IV tetradrachm and the Gallienus aureus. Lightweight aurei remind me of tremisses as they are so thin! Hopefully will add one....... eventually! Congrats on the purchases!
Lovely coins, really beautifull Istos AE. That reverse, " Eagle on Dolphin" is amazing. So is the belly button (Bing's photo)
Have you managed to doublecheck the pedigree on the Gallienus? I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in Roma when it sold but the earlier NAC 49 listing includes: Ex. Biaggi (1471) Ex Dorotheum sale 13-16 June 1955, Apostolo Zeno, 2013. Göbl 670b and pl. 53, 670b (this coin) Assuming that is correct, that's an incredible purchase!
That would be astounding. Several of the greatest provenances imaginable. Zeno, the Venetian librettist lived 1669 to 1750.
Absolutely. When I saw the coin, I checked in in Gobl and found it. I located a copy of the Dorotheum Sale and discovered it is not Lot 2013 but Lot 2019.This is confirmed in Gobl.
Congratulations on the great coins and the wonderful provenances. I'm jealous of your Zeno in particular, as I have none yet.
