I can’t post pictures right now, but the 1801 large cent with three errors on the reverse is pretty neat. The “U” in “UNITED” was punched upside down and then right side up, which made it look like “III.” One of the lowest stems is missing on the wreath and the fraction is “1/000” instead of “1/100.” This was a reflection of the low morale at the mint when some members of Congress were looking to shut it down.
Tough question, and one I might answer differently on any given day. If I restrict myself to everything but Morgan dollars, there are still a lot of cool ones to choose from, although I would probably gravitate toward screwed-up dates. 1824 over various dates half was the first to pop into mind, so today I'll say that one.
Mine has to be my avatar - the 1883-O VAM-1C (1,2 or 3). The reverse die was not properly hardened and resulted in the most spectacular die failure... My avatar is a crop from my LDS VAM-1C2 that started me collecting (hoarding) these....
Can't say this is my favorite variety but it's the favorite of the ones I possess. What I like about this one is the clarity of the overdate.
I think the 1807 50C Bearded Goddess or the 1859 1c Snow-1 variety would be my favorite coins. Both varieties are expensive and I’d love to cherry-pick them...
The Sheldon 103 LIHERTY variety Draped Bust Cent is a favourite of mine. Would love to upgrade my low grade example. Among Capped Bust Dimes: the 1824/2 JR-2 with pointed 1. Only 50 or so are known. Also the 1829 Bust Dime with 'curl base 2', very scarce as well with about 40 known. Last dime I would love to get: the 1841-O with 'Closed Bust Reverse' - a very rare variety. Among the small cents, I would love to cherry-pick an 1858/7. No success so far... The 1867/67 is another favourite among the small cents. I was very happy to find one some time ago.
One of my favorites. 42/41. This one was cleaned. Always wanted the Denver overdate but the money got in the way.
@Eduard , I just got this one back. Snow 2, FS-303 RPD. Much more scarce than the 1867/67. Only 1 finer in 64 RD. Mine is MS64 RB.
This one is a massive rarity. Only around a dozen known. I cherrypicked it last year for $50. It graded VF30, third finest known behind a VF35 and an MS61. Date repunched over inverted date.
@C-B-D , that variety seems to be really rare. HA archives does not list any sales at all! How much did you pay for it, if I may ask? I paid about $250 for the 301, so I think I did ok.
It was in an ICG MS64 RB, but didn't have the variety on the label. I paid $665, cracked it out, and had it graded at PCGS.
I wasn't aware of this one. An "inverted overdate" set (including individual digit punches) would be pretty cool, although I can't imaging it would be that big. Are there more than the 1809/6 half cent and the 4 shown here?
Eduard: As for the Flying Eagle: 1858/7, I have cherried 3 of them, one in F-12, one VF-20 and one XF. Also, In the Indians: the 1864 L is a favorite, I have cherried #3 in AG; #5 in G; #1 in VG; #2 in Fine; #1- VF, & #1 VF pitted; Fun finds, plus the time I cherried a 1909 S, VDB, got it as a '09S, now in an NGC F-12 holder. many others.
