I just came across a Mercury dime of 1943. The mint mark seems to be W which I have never heard of before. Is it a counterfeit?

The W is really an AW and are the initials of the designer - Adolph Weinman.

The mintmark is located on the reverse of the coin after the E of ONE. Your coin does not have a mintmark so it was minted in Philly.

    Grade?
Hard to tell because of the reflections, could be a very high end AU.
But, if unc, it is a nice one.

Actually, you can find coins with a W mintmark, albeit mostly modern cents and gold bullion I believe.

In those cases the W stands for West Point.

Yes I have heard about West Point minting only NCLTs but I knew it can't mint mercuries...so thought of checking with you guys..

    FYI

The West Point Mint minted, if I'm not mistaken, 150k Roosevelt dimes in 1996 and they were only available in a special 1996 mint set. This is the only business strike "type" coin to date that contains a "W" mint mark even though it was not intended for circulation. I believe it was made to commemorate 50 years of the Roosevelt dime. I wish they had made this one 90% silver though.

I have one and I think its pretty neat for a modern clad.

Beautiful Merc by the way. Merc dimes are near and dear to my heart, specially BU and proofs.

    Keep on Collecting!!!
