I don't see the need for universal standards. Each company could employ their own. People with the coins will gravitate toward the company and standards they like the best.

I've got a problem with the "company and standards they like the best" part.
Too many people who don't have knowledge of grading.
They're the one who like the companies that grade everything MS-70 or thereabouts.
And that's what keeps those companies in business.

Now if you mean the most accurate as judged by the experts (dealers and collectors), then I agree.

But if there's not going to be one standard, then why automate (partially or fully) the process.
Yes, it would greatly reduce the graders' "bad days", but I suspect the expense would not merit the results.
Even with its faults, the current system is probably the best.
Like the American form of government.

It (computerized technical grading) will be with us in a short time. There smart people working on it already; I have no doubt... Like they say, one thing you cannot stop is gradual progress.

Remember the story about John Henry vs. the Steam Drill?

I see nothing wrong with each company setting its own standards. Some companies could be more "tight" on their standards. Others not so much. The top tiers would eventually be determined by businesses and the public like the standards/pricing/turnaround time/etc.

To me it is like having coke, pepsi, dr pepper. For Lincolns I would go to company x and for 2 cent pieces I might go to company y. Company Z might get my business if they were running a special.

Repeatability. Lower cost. Faster return time. Unbiased & precise specs.
