This appears to be the small 6, stemless variety. Is there something similar to the VAM community for early American coppers? This one seems to have a die crack through the 6 and the reverse is rotated 45 degrees CCW.
On coins this old I don't think a 45° rotation is that significant. LOTS of coins had more than that.
This variety (Cohen-1) doesn't have a noted die state with a die crack near the "6". The "crack" looks like a piece of fuzz to me and the coin may have an old cleaning...but it's hard to tell from pics.
I’m questioning whether it’s a counterfeit. I don’t like the little bumps I’m seeing on it @Jack D. Young
Coin is an 1806 C-1 as previously noted and doesn't match the counterfeits we have been researching. Definitely not a die break but appears to be a scratch to my eyes. Half cents are attributed by variety by Cohen (hence the "C-1" designation) and die state my Manley. Early American Coppers (EAC) is the go-to group for these. Is it possible to add an edge view of this one to this post? Best, Jack EAC 5050
Unless I'm crazy, that's a fiber sitting on the 6 and not a crack or scratch. It's white and casting a shadow. Looks synthetic....
Looked darker in the 2nd image but I may be crazy as well! Hate trying to make calls on less than adequate images...
Thanks Jack. Those little raised bumps were what concerned me and the less than stellar pics. I wasn’t sure about this coin from the images
Dangit. It *was* lint. Buy 3 die cracked coins in a short period and you start seeing die cracks everywhere. Took a serious Big Bad Wolfing to blow it off though. After 2 huffs and puffs, I was feeling confident that it was a die crack until I tested it with a blunt toothpick.
I'd like to confirm my estimated grade. Despite the one side having a minor rim ding and slight porosity throughout, do you think this would qualify for a numeric grade or get slammed with "details"? I'm leaning toward EF-40 or EF-45. But I've seen what I would consider grade inflation on some of these early coppers that runs much higher.
Heck, I might be being a lot harsher on this than I realized. A quick scan search on closed HA auctions pulled up *this* one graded MS62 BN:
