I check the US Mint website every few days to see if the designs for the new cents have been released yet. Is there a better place to be looking? We're only about 6 mos. from production. Would have thought they would have at least the first design out by now.
these are the latest possibilities I have found. They are recommended by the fine arts commision. I'm still bummed they aren't using the wheat ear reverse for one of the choices.
It'd be pretty cool I think to reintroduce the wheatback. But I do like the top left one and bottom right in those pics. The other two I could take or leave... I hear they're redesigning the Sacagewea as well.
Is the Lincoln cent going to be made from nickel? The picture posted by viper looks like that cupro nickel instead of zinc copper.
There is no wheat restrike? I thought they were going to remint the wheat cents for the 100th year. No?
Me too, I was also hoping for a 95% copper set for the silver proof sets, but I highly doubt that will happen.
The wheat back has been around for around 50 years. What's wrong with some variety on our most numerous coins, our cents. Our coins need a radical change to future themes and past themes that deserve to be oncoins. (Theodore Roosevelt for one) Bruce
I thought they were going to be copper plated steel for the circulations and a 95% copper wheat like the first one, same composition and design for us collectors?
Nothing wrong with a new design when/if the cent resumes in 2010. It's just that a lot of people were looking forward to the 2009 S VDB wheat back. I thought it was a done deal a few years ago, then they came up with the four reverse idea.
new................................. I hear they're redesigning the Sacagewea as well.[/QUOTE] you're right about the sac buck. the top photo is the design that was allegedly picked for 2009.
I hate to say it, but I think our modern coins are so devoid of artistic beauty that is is shameful. There were a few nice state quarters, buy in large I am unimpressed. It's almost as if crappy uninspiring sketches are the new standard for our coinage. Where has lady liberty gone to? I guess she graces the presidential dollars, but I would like to see more Great American Ideals themed coins instead of all this hogwash that is coming out. Not that Licoln's boyhood cabin isn't neat, but what about symbolisms of freedom, liberty, patriotism, revolution.....?? Same with the new Sacajawea designs. Is she planting corn??? Pottery??? 3 unnamed faces??? Why not use the likeness of Sacajawea as Lady Liberty w/ an Indian theme instead of some Disney looking character, and then on the reverse have something like an American themed cornucopia depicting the land of plenty. I guess I am just spouting, but it seems to me the the stories behind the art are bland or are told in a text book. I want something more interesting... A read between the lines type of artistic meaning that makes things art truly special and interesting.
I fully agree, and this fact really bothers me. Especially with modern technology. There is no reason...none (except lack of effort and cheapness) that today's coins lack the details and beauty of coins 100 years ago. Not just beauty, but general design and strike quality. Modern designs lack the detail that old coins do...even with 100 years worth of time to make the process better. Look at a Morgan Dollar, the detail is amazing. Look at any one of today's coins and its just really sad.
