First, "collecting" and "future" generally don't belong together.
    In general:
    - "Collecting" belongs together with "enjoyment" .
    - "Future" belongs together with "investment".

    So decide which you prefer.
Actually the two are not mutually exclusive, but one one is a normally a more prominent aim than the other, i.e., you can collect for enjoyment but in the back of your mind you are aware of the investment potential.

One controlling factor is your wallet.
It's hard to collect gold sovereigns on a farthing income.

Best place to start is with something that is inexpensive and appeals to you.
Use this to be your learning experience about grading, etc.
Then if you lose interest your investment won't be large.
If you start with expensive coins and only can afford a couple a year, you'll lose interest quickly.

Learn to walk before you try running.
    And buy the books.

for the most part i agree with kanga. Are you looking to collect for a future profit, or do you collect for the fun of doing it? The answer to either question will greatly aide you in deciding what to do next.

Also, when it comes to collecting - NOTHING beats books! Ask around, there are alot of MUST reads for new collectors :)

    Welcome to the forum :D

This is a dangerous subject with this crowd! You may be locked in to hours and hours of reading if we all post what we feel about collecting vs. investing. I think if I were you, I'd click onto some of the older posts very quietly so that you don't stir a sleeping giant! :mouth:

    Alex:
Consider buying books on the type of coins for the country (I presume England) that you are interested in collecting.
Speak to other collectors, get their ideas, impressions, interests, read some more.

Then decide what may interest you.

Alex first off welcome to CoinTalk, next thing is do you want to collect for fun or are you hoping to make a few bob? If the latter then please be aware that prices do not allways go up, they also go down  Also when coming to sell your (Future) collection unless you have some choice pieces in there then you wont make a fortune LOL
For fun buy a stack of cheap forign coins and sort through them, get to know the different types that are out there and buy a few good books, if you are interested in history of our country then try buying some hammerd coins :)
For pure investment then go with bullion (some of them are actualy quite nice to look at) but try to get them at as close to melt as you can and not from the Royal Mint LOL.
