Romulus and Remus and a She Wolf. Romulus and Remus are the mythical sons of Mars, the Roman god of War. After their mother , Silvia, is imprisoned they were thrown into the Tiber River. They were later found and raised by a she wolf and a cricket. According to legend they later went on to be the founders of Rome.

I believe this is a Barbarous ancient though I have yet to pin it down. Romulus Remus.jpg

Another one from my Nordic Creatures copper round set.

This one depicts Odin, a prominent Norse God, on his stallion, a flying eight legged steed named Sleipnir. They are flanked by Odins ravens named Huginn and Muninn.

Odin is the Norse God of wisdom, knowledge, death, and many other things. He is also the husband to the Goddess Frigg.

Odins ravens, Huginn and Muninn are said to fly all around Midgard and then return to Odins shoulder to whisper the news in his ear. Basically a couple of spies. NordicCopper1.jpg

One of my favorite animals: the Hippocamp.

    2560 Hippocamp ct.jpg

Gallienus (253-268), antoninianus. Obv. Radiate bust right. GALLIENVS AVG. Rev. Hippocamp t.r., NEPTVNO CONS AVG. 18 x 20 cm, 2.33 gr. It looks like this hippocamp has a bundle of lightning in its tail, or is it a ventriloquist's dummy (does it need one?).

By the way, I saw these two marble hippocamps only yesterday in a classicist seaside pavilion built in 1827, it was a birthday present of King William of the Netherlands to his wife. In the middle two dolphins curling around a trident.
