I have a 1951 Wheat Penny, with a error on it. It is missing the "S" in United States on the front. A year ago I took it to a antique show, where three coin shops setup displays. None of them could tell me anything about it, not even the coin books they were looking in listed a error. They even called people on thier cell phones, and they still couldn't find anything on it. They looked at it under a microscope and they said it hasn't been tampered with, that it was a legitimate error, but none of the books list it.

Does anybody have anything similar to this, or could anyone provide any information on it?

Maybe a filled die? You probably should send it in to ANACS if you think it could be valuable or if any one else on the site can better authenticate it and tell you what you have.

  4. Hello VirginiaRebel, welcome to coin talk. Looks like your coin has a filled die. Assuming it hasn't just been buffed of the coin, the S on the die clogged up with "mint goo". Since the die used to make most coins are incuse, or concave, this allows the metal to flow into the die causing a raised image. Ta-da, a coin is born. However when a die, or part of a die, fills up with anything the result is something missing on the coin. Make any sense?:thumb:
So if the S was not buffed or filled of that is what happened. As far as being a legitimate error, I would call it so. Some do not.
If you are looking for something similar to this I'm sure some on this forum could post pics of their coins with filled dies. Hope this helps?:p

    Happy hunting,

    Michael

That's pretty cool as long as it isn't buffed, but it doesn't look like it is from here

I have several coins that are missing digits. I was told that they are filled dies. Debris or something got into the die and missed the stamp of the coin. Got a few nice Mercs that are 194_ somethings. No indication at all of anything being there. Odd that yours is in the middle of the coin, but I guess anything is possible.,

All the coin dealers at the show said that it was odd it being in the middle of the coin, as opposed to being closer to the edge, but they all said without a doubt it wasn't buffed or grinded off. They even looked at it with microscopes.

Does anyone know the typical value of a coin like this?

Hi Reb, and [IMG] to CoinTalk.

Unfortunately from your standpoint, filled die errors are extremely common, and rarely command any premium over face value unless they are truly spectacular.

Hello Virginia, it does look like there was a bit of metal in the die when this "penny :D" er cent was struck. It also has a strange buffed look to it like it went thru a HOT dryer loaded with cottons.

Your coin has most likely been plated with some other metal.

How about a 1951 wheat penny that has the 1 after the 5 that is off to the side like it was taken from the die before it was done stamping it almost looks like 195/.It has no mint mark and it leaves an indentation where the 1 is supposed to be. Has anyone ever seen this before?
