New Commodus Sestertius

    I wanted to show you my new sestertius that I bought. This is of Commodus, but struck under Marcus Aurelius as Augustus in 178 AD. The obverse, as you can see, has the laureate head right and the reverse has Libertas standing left holding a pileus and sceptre. It is listed in RIC III as 1589 (Marcus Aurelius).

    Wonderful coin. Good sestertii of Commodus are surprisingly difficult to come by sometimes.

    outstanding...both reverse and obverse are in pretty good condition. Nice portrait of a young beardless Commodus...looking very much like his father.
