I was thinking about buying some problem coins (Cleaned, corroded, ET.), just so I know what to look out for and learn how to identify one....I obviously wouldn't spend a bunch of money on each example, but I thought it might be a good idea to do it for the learning experience...That way I don't blow a bunch of money on a problem coin, because i can use my examples to compare.

    should I do it?

Look at other people's problem coins and learn that way.
That saves you money for the good coins you want.
The pros (dealers, specialists and graders) may need and can afford to do what you suggest, but most collectors can't.

You could also start an image collection of problem coins.

That's the way to do it.

Go to coin shows. No end of problem coins there ! Most of them raw.

There are increasing numbers of problem coins showing up in slabs. Look for NCS - they're all problem coins. Apparently the hot market is drawing problem coins out of the woodwork and into slabs for online auctions.
