Beautiful classic head $ 2 1/2 gold coin

I recently purchased this coin from Mark Feld.

Here's the description of it:
1834 Classic $2.50 NGC/CAC AU53 $1200
Well struck, with enticing semi-prooflike surfaces which do not show up in the images. Rich in color, lustrous and quite appealing looking.

Nice color on this one. For some reason, this series can have some funky luster, possibly due to cleanings etc over the years.

Good pickup ! As Spock says, it's a good deal if you're happy. And I bet you are.

 

Nice coin, and an excellent example of how imaging a coin can make it look much worse than it is.
I would not have thought it was AU from the obv/rev images.
The coin probably looks a LOT better in hand.
I've got the same problem when I image some of my coins, and gold is the worst.

A certain member on the NGC boards told me it might be cleaned. Why he said this I have no idea. Mark is an ex-NGC grader and KNOWS when a coin has been cleaned, he has said it isn't. Furthermore, NGC *and* CAC approved of it, not being cleaned.

It's a wonderful coin and I'm happy with it, and that's all that matters, right? I wish people wouldn't say that kind of stuff to me.

That's very true. I tend to ask alot what OTHER people think anyway, when the only thing that should matter is what *I* think and that *I'm* happy with it.

 

exactly if its any solace i was planning to buy a similar coin for 12 grand (different grade) and be comfortable in your decisions a better deal and a worser deal can almost always be found

 

I think its a very nice example and you should be proud to own it...I know I would be.

 

Man, that's somethin' else! I really love older gold coins. Would love to be able to afford them.
Right now all that's in my price range are $5 American Eagles, which are still nice, but I'd love to own what you got there someday.

Well, let me be honest. I just splurged on my first one this past week, and it's now the only coin I've spent over $100 on. Still, I can see mytself buying one every so often. They're like mini St. Gaudens, which of course is another beautiful coin way out of my price range.

Maybe someday if I have money to throw around I too can be a Gold Coin Lover.

Heck I'm not rich, I just save my money up and I've been collecting gold coins since I was 10. I'm now 20.

When I was 10 I saved up all my birthday money (This was when gold was alot cheaper, around $300 per ounce) and went to the local Gold'n'Coins in La Habra california, and bought my first gold coin, a 1/4 oz gold american eagle.

It cost me around $86. After tax it was around $90.

I don't know what attracted me to coins, I started out collecting foreign coins. I used to go over to my friends house and look at her coins. When she went to greece she brought me back 2 greek coins. I was elated.

I had that 1/4 oz gold piece for many years, and sold it a couple years ago for a $20 MS63 PCGS 1908 No motto saint gaudens. That and alot of other coins to get that saint.

I cracked it out, sent it into NGC, and it graded MS64. I took it to the SAME store I bought it as MS63, and showed it to the guy there and he offered to buy it for MS64 money!

Still, my dream coin would be to have an early gold US coin. I thought classic head was early gold, but apparently early gold us pre-1834, the capped head and before. These start at around 6K and up.

I doubt I'll ever be able to afford one, but who knows!

 

Also, coin collecting is supposed to be fun, but for me, sometimes, it isn't. I have aspergers, which is a minor form of autism, where you have intense interest in certain interests, but obessively. I've had it since i was very young. It first started out when I was around 7 and I Collected beanie babies, I saw a counterfeit section on them and was worried all my beanie babies were fake.

Now they're worthless anyway, so it doesn't matter. I remember eventually reading somewhere about counterfeit coins, I told my dad about this and he said, "How can someone counterfeit coins? That's rubbish. There's no such thing as counterfeit coins."

We went to a coin store and I asked the guy there. He said they had a bunch of counterfeits in the backroom. I've decided since then I wanted to become an expert on counterfeit coins, especially gold coins. Not altered coins, just counterfeit gold. I have several books on the subject. I took a class at the ANA convention in phoenix and it had an 8 hour counterfeit detection class. I got to look at tons of counterfeit gold. It was wonderful and gave me great confidence. I asked Brian Silliman if I could spot most counterfeits, and he said I could. I was very flattered by that comment. I still try to look at as many gold coins as I possibly can so I know by color when a gold coin just isn't "right".Ever since then it seems almost every coin I've gotten Ive worried about it in some form or another, that's it faked, been cleaned, tampered with, to a ridiculous point. It's frusterated alot of people, made the most patient people hate me, and I used to get into fights in message boards and was banned from several.

Eventually as I matured into a young man, I realized arguing with people was useless and I did not get into any fights or arguments. Now I just realize everyone has their own opinion and if they disagree with you thats perfectly okay.

Now with this coin, I had it and showed it on the NGC boards, and Munkyman, (chad) there told me it looked cleaned. I told mark this, and having seen the coin and been an ex-NGC grader, he told me with confidence this coin wasn't cleaned, and was fine and orgininal. Several other people on different forums told me from the pictures, it looked fine, orgininal. I was at first worried about the coin being cleaned, but if you think about it there's no reason it would be, it's graded by NGC, has a CAC sticker, and has been looked at by an ex-NGC grader (Mark).

I'm not worried about it anymore, and I love the coin and will keep it, I guess it's just everyone has different opinions, and as long as *I'm* happy with it, (which I am) other peoples opinion doesn't matter. I have low self esteem also so i always ask for approval from others (hence this thread)

That was a smart move for a 10 year old :smile. I'm more into silver coins just because they're more affordable for me. But like I mentioned, those 1/10th oz. $5 American Eagles are pushing it for me price wise, but I think are pretty nice.
The one I just got was a 1998 graded MS69 by PCGS. These newer gold commerative coins are fantastic looking, but nothing like those 1800s-early 1900s gold coins. Indian heads and Libertys and St. Gaudens. All very, very beautiful

Kudos to you, and who knows maybe someday you'll have one of the very early gold coins!

 

Steve, the mint just released fractional buffalos today.
You should get one of those when you can...they are the first time the mint has made pure gold coins in fractional (less than 1 ounce) sizes.

And plus, they come in a nice box.:hammer:
