Anyone waiting for backordered rolls might want to check their order status. Looks like the mint is currently shipping the second batch. My rolls which this morning had a shipping date of 3/22 tonight show a "shipped" date of 3/10.

 

Mine said they were shipped today as well....Yay!

 

Mine were still backordered until 3/23 (although nickel orders placed today are supposed to ship on 3/14...) and there was still a "problem" with my order preventing the other items to be shipped, so I cancelled the order. I guess I'll place a new order for all original items plus the proof SAE when it's released on Tuesday.

 

Here is one for the books..... the little bank here in town that never received even one of the 2004 nickel designs, just came up with a 'small' order of the Buffalo nickels. They are limiting the general public ot buying one roll, so that more people will have a chance to get some. It just might be the U.S. Mint is serious about wanting these to circulate this time.

 

Mine just arrived from the mint today. I have to say that I really like the design now that I've seen it in person, but the obverses that I can see on the end of 6 different rolls are terribly dinged up! It looks like someone set another coin on top and off center and whacked it with a hammer! Just REALLY bad contact marks, NOT a striking error. Hopefully once I open up a few there will be some nicer ones to be found.

 

Just ordered 2 sets of Bison rolls. I normally don't buy Mint rolls but had to make an exception for this.

 

I called my local bank today just to check... They said they had some but they were sold out :-/

That’s the best news I heard in a while (coin related, anyway). I wish these coins (Sackys, state quarters, commem nickels) would actually circulate and not all end up on Home Shopping Network. I am glad the fed is shipping some to the small towns so the average person can get them. This is how it should be.

 

I'm not sure how it works in the rest of the world, but in mine the fed doesn't have anything to do with it. My banks order their money from regional banks, not the fed. They get what they ask for...quarters, nickels, cents, whatever, but they don't have any choice in whether they're new coins or not. And they don't know what they're getting until they arrive. One of my small banks doesn't even order any change. They have a guy that owns vending machines that keeps them in ample supply of change, and they haven't placed an order for coins for over a year.

This is why it's tough to get new releases in the sticks...our banks just don't get the opportunity to receive any as these regional banks ship the 'old' stuff on to them.

 

I'm very ignorant on this. What is a regional bank? Is it a place a person can go and get coins, or only a distribution point.

 

All money comes from the Fed. Currency and Coin. The Mint ships to the Fed and Bureau of Engraving and Printing ships to the Fed. I think regional banks might be the satellite branches of the Fed, for example, FRB New York has a branch in Buffalo.

My bank, the one I work for has not gotten Calif. or the new nickels. We might not because the armored car carriers horde the coins for the big banks like Bank of America, Chase and so on.

 

My use of the term regional bank refers to a much larger bank such as here in Indiana, National City or Fifth Third. They actually act as distribution points for smaller banks within a region. This may not be the case everywhere, but this is how my smaller banks choose to acquire their currency. Check with the bank you deal with and see where they actually order their currency from. I would guess many will be surprised to discover it doesn't come direct from the mint or the fed. I know I was surprised to find this out when I asked about it when the Indiana quarters were released.

 

Yesterday my order of 5 sets said will be shipped on 3/14. I just checked the status this morning and it was changed to 5 units backordered. Expected to ship on 04/29/2005.

 

Are they making the Bison Nickels for a longer period of time than the two preceeding nickels in the series? Jim

 

In banker lingo "regional" bank just means a major bank that is not one of the top-tier multi-state operations like Wells Fargo or Bank of America. Union Bank of California is an example. The regionals often act as correspondent banks for smaller local banks, providing services to their customers that the small banks can't offer directly, such as foreign exchange.

 

I had my nickel order status changed from "expected to ship on 3/14" (yes, I know that is in the past...) to "expected to ship on 4/29" today. Ouch!

 

Received my nickel rolls a couple of days ago. I felt the mint was pretty timely in getting my order filled.
