Looks like a really nice one. NGC's price guide is either not keeping up with the times or people are paying too much. I understand this was a real nice penny, but there were so many minted! Do people just not realize how many are available? I'm not a big collector of pennies but I wouldn't mind having one of these to look at. Just wondering if you guys would have bought or passed. What would you have paid for this?
nI don't see the wear on this coin, but maybe I'm missing it. This looks like it could be unc. Maybe the market took it at that, or at least as a slider...
Nice eye appeal. All it takes is two bidders who really like the look of a coin to push an auction above average retail pricing.
This is a very nice coin. Based upon the pictures I would estimate the grade AU-58. This coin looks to be a little pricey. But a coin value is more than just price. It is your eye appeal, your coin collection and its subjective grade. As a dealer the price is an important factor along with its eye appeal. How many buyers are there for this coin at this price? As a collector you may look at a coin first based upon its eye appeal then what you think the subjective grade and how will it fit your collection. Is it better than my VG Collection, do I want to improve the collection or am I satified with just filling the book and have a full set. Almost everyone has a grade that will be usually plus or minus 1 of the perceived grade. Even the professionals will differ from time to time. Usually in a lower cost coin my advise is don't let price become the controlling factor. Answer your collection question then buy the coin that fits your needs. With
hmm not sure what happened there. With this coin you should be aware there will be a few in the future to choose from. This coin is really priced at MS63 pricing, but follow those guidelines and it will become apparent as to your direction.
Coin Values Mag puts it a $22. At my price guide (opinion) I'd put it at $13.30. For extra eye appeal, $15 or so. But it's worth what you think is right if you're happy with what you got. Bruce

Notice this particular coin is on a black background, nothing special, but most of the others ( same seller ) are not. Color is difficult to read when on a non white background.....especially red copper maybe it's camera setting or something else, but this coin shows no luster and hints of recoloring $40 on a nice red BU VDB is a very fair price.......cheap infact IF it's an original coin. I risk saying it is a washed out cleaned coin
My experience with this seller is that if he says it is AU, I assure you that it is nothing better than. $40 for an au VDB is a bit much for me. Were it BU red would probably be a descent price.
Wow! This thread took off while I was gone. Yeah, a lot of you guys confirmed my suspicions. All it would have taken is me jumping in this auction also, and jacking the price even higher. Who knows what it could have went for? I may just look around Heritage for one as I don't think I'm willing to get in bidding wars for one of these on ebay. I kind of wanted a graded one anyway. Thanks for the info on this seller. Seems shady. AJ, great catch on the background. I wasn't paying attention to them at all but you're right. Most are white and some he chooses black. They're all pennies. Now what would be the point of changing? The guy's hiding something. Just like a diamond dealer.
