Indian Head Cent ... What Kind of Damage?

    Another gift from my local coin dealer. All I can make out is that its an Indian Head cent (and I am not really sure it isn't a token of some sort). What would cause this damage? I was thinking it was in a fire, or maybe acid dipped. Your thoughts please. Post pictures of similar coins if you have any.

    I'm going to guess it is a ground find but herpes is very possible.;)

    An 1877 to boot! I wonder what kind of grade PCGS would give this baby.......as a P-1 would be much too generous.
