So I found a 2007 John Adams Proof Dollar today at work (Had the mirror fields, satin obverse/reverse high point details, and S mint mark on the edge) but there's something off about it, in equal spaces, there are 3 little 'bump' lines that separate the coins edge into three equal portions. Now I know the first series of the small gold dollars with edge lettering had a few errors in them, my question is: Is this a known error? Or anything else that is legit and possibly expected... Or, is it casting marks... Making this a fake... Image for reference (It's the line at the top, there are three of them, equally spaced around the coin edge)
Are the regular dots there? Two of them for 2007. Bigger picture please. Edge lettering on the proofs was done differently than on the non-proofs. On the proofs the edge lettering happend at the same time the obv and rev were struck. Perhaps the collar was segmented (3 segments) and the "lines" are actual gaps between the segments?
Since they are bump lines (i.e. raised, not incuse), it makes sense that it is the gap between segments. Where are the 3 "bump lines" in relation to the date, "e pluribus unum" and "in god we trust"?
That's about the best picture I can get with my phone, but I do see two same sized dots in different spaces on the edge...
Hmmm, that's normal dot spacing. I'm sticking with my theory about a gap between segments. No idea if this is right. No idea if it is a known "variety" or whatever either. Tomorrow, more knowledgeable people will chime in.
I just wanted to know if it's right because I have a small collection of the golden dollars (About 125) but none have had three ridges on the coin... If the collar was indeed segmented this makes sense as I believe this edge lettering was new for the mint anyway so perhaps the collar wasn't tight enough and some metal seeped through...
I have read that segmented collars were used for circulation (P, D) coins starting in 2009. Before that (i.e. 2007-2008) the edge lettering was done diffrently (not with collar) for circulation coins. BUT, the 2007-2008 PROOFS had edge lettering done with colllars. 'nuf said. Wait for more knowledgeable.
Aha, so ridges are to be expected... Nice... Plus it's another thing distinguishing the Proofs from the Business strikes as the business strikes don't have the ridges...
Very interesting article. Now I'll have to dig out my proof sets and check the edge lettering. (maybe tomorrow. lol)
I have a found a 2009 s Zachary Tyler with the same 3 raised vertical lines on the edge. I haven't been able to find much more info on them other than the previous article. If anyone has more information, I would love to know more about them.
Mumm13 you would get more better answers if you would start your own thread not hijacking a thread thats 5-6 months old we need pictures to %100 verify what you are seeing I'm getting tired of this happening this happens to often.
@Mumm13 is asking for additional information on this type of error, not asking for an evaluation of his coin. IMO, I don't have a problem with his request tagging onto an old thread and feel that it's acceptable. If you're getting tired of these types of posts, then by all means, skip them. I agree that new members adding unrelated questions to old threads can be annoying, but maybe you could provide helpful advice and suggest why they would get better answers if they started a new thread. How is a new member supposed to know that you're tired of this type of post? We already have enough old curmudgeons on here, we don't need a teenage curmudgeon as well
Sorry I'm in a bad mood I should know better alot of things have been going on that I can't tell for the worst.
I apologize. I will take my amateur coin questions elsewhere. No wonder coin collecting is losing popularity because a newbie might not know per se etiquette of said coin "Club". So again I apologize for annoying you. Thanks for ruining my possible interest in collecting.
I didn't mean that if you read the message above yours I wrote a bad message and I regret it continue coin collecting I didn't mean to offend you.i was in a bad mood at the time and I didn't even realize what I was typing.
