Am I bonkers for preferring the look of coins like this one?

Take a look at the picture, this is an MS65 DPL coin.

I know the saying "buy what you like", but am I crazy for preferring the look of this coin over a clean DPL?

At some point in the future I imagine my collection will be sold, whether by me or my greedy kids :). Am I killing the value of my collection by buying coins that look like this? How much less, in y'alls opinion, would this coin go for as opposed to a cleaner coin?

"DPL" is used by NGC. Both PCGS and ANACS use "DMPL". ~ Chris

I noticed that there is a "Dash" under the second "8". What is the mintmark?

This is not my coin, it is merely an example of what I am talking about.

Thanks for the pictures, nice coin. As to your original question(s)... if this is what You like then does it really matter what anyone else thinks? It is your hobby/ passion. The value question?, who knows what the market may be in a few years. It wasn’t all that long ago all these toned coins didn’t bring a premium like they do now. I wish I still had all those toners I passed off at a discount:facepalm:

I have always preferred my definition of Eye Appeal to be the most important attribute of any coin in my collection. I only have one slabbed coin in my collection of thousands. And, that slab was for verification. The collection must respect your own taste. What it sells for after you are gone is irrelevant, unless your goal is to enhance the value of your estate.

Well yeah, you're a little wacko, but really, did we ever meet a "CC" we didn't like?

This statement sort of made me ponder my own mortality... :).

I agree with this. I guess it's a measure of finding a good middle ground between what I like to look at now and what will possibly offer the most value after I'm gone. Something for me to think about here.

    Thanks

Well, taste is something that is just personal to the individual, so if that's what ya like then that's what ya like. As I've always said it's a chocolate and vanilla thing.

But do I ? Good lord no ! I'd take a clean looking coin over that any day. But that's me.

I mean there's people who "like" pistachio ice cream, but I wouldn't eat it on a bet, and I'm a gamblin man !

One of Mark Feld's rules (more or less): Buy what you like, but be aware that future buyers may not like what you like.

While today's general tastes for Morgans are white or colorful, deviating from that to buy one that has some eye-appeal-neutral toning doesn't qualify you as crazy as much as buying one that's clearly overgraded.

No, you're bonkers for obsessing over old pocket change. Or so I've been told. ;)

So what you're saying is, if I do buy it, don't send it in to CAC? :)

I agree. I firmly believe there is a collector for every coin. Whatever rocks your boat, I say good for you and happy collecting. It is interesting highlighting.

I am the bigger weirdo, preferring nice AU pieces over BU pieces when I collected US coins. I still have about 80 XF-AU bust halves, and about 110 XF-AU SL halves in the sdb, and not one I would call BU.

The vast majority of my coins from early to mid 20th Century were found in the wild or traded with friends that had coins from the wild. I have upgraded a few over the years. Many of the upgrades were also found in the wild. I can't make myself upgrade anymore. I just like what I have accumulated over the last 70 years.

Some of us like Morgans that don't look like they've had a recent dip. I like the coin in question.

You like them dirty and that’s ok. She has original PL/DPL surfaces and a “rusty” color. I’d prefer this Morgan over a blazing white coin.

I agree with collect what you like. I personally have very few high grade coins and even fewer slabbed coins. My collecting tastes run to the circulated coins, the ones that have passed through many hands. I like the coin the OP posted as it has some character to it. If you like it as part of your collection then that is where it belongs.
