A friend of mine asked me if I can find out what this Morgan Would grade at. Also when graded is it a flat fee. Or a percentage of coin
A fair estimate to grade a coin is around $50.00 and shipping expense. Nice Morgan, but you would not recoup the expense.
Looks like a circulated 1900 O to me. Worth $20 at best, no point in grading it. Don't know about authenticity, the wear pattern on the wings strikes me as strange.
It would only sell for melt value. In my area that's about $15.00 to a dealer. It's a 1900-O and it's been polished.
It looks counterfeit, check the specs and be sure! No, it isn't worth getting it graded and it has no value to a collector of Morgan's. A 1900-O au50 is worth around $35 and that if real isn't even close to au50.
The rim on the left side of the reverse -- what's going on there? It looks funny because of the light angle, especially on the obverse, but I'm also not convinced it's real. Have you weighed it and checked it with a magnet?
Looks fake as can be to me. I would tell the "friend" to send it back to the seller for a refund if possible. If that's not possible, send it to ANA for their reference collection of fakes.
They weren't interested in the collecting market and passed in day to day commerce. The 1900-s doesn't have a premium in low grades. The 1900 o/cc which does have a premium has been counterfeited as well along with many other dates and mint marks. There are many out there.
I asked that very same question about a faked 1909-s cent a while back. Why wouldn’t the counterfeiters add “VDB” to increase their take?..... One very astute CT member explained to me. If a counterfeiter makes one dollar bills how many people will scrutinize them? If he makes twenty dollar bills they will be looked at much more closely. So it may take more work to create one hundred one dollar bills instead of five twenties. But he stands less of a chance of being caught.
No they don't but I see none of the normal counterfeit signs. It's a common date and as far as I know there are no known counterfeits of this date.
