I recently acquired a handful of BU 1898-O Morgans. The strikes aren't fantastic, but most have fairly nice luster. I will eventually put all of these up for sale, but I'd love to get your opinions as to grade and how you rate them for eye appeal. Which is the best/worst? I think these fall into the MS61-64 range with most in between, but Morgans are not my specialty.

Also, I realize that the VAM is probably without interest...what VAM does it appear? The "O" appears high and there doesn't appear to be any doubling of and of the date digits.

Finally, what do you think these should be selling for?

    Thanks!

I think the rev is nicer on every coin except the last one. There are some severely marked cheeks among these coins. I'm not expert enough on the series to say much more.

Without looking at everyone else's posts:

    1- 62
    2- 63
    3- 61
    4- 63
    5- 64
    6- 62
    7- 55-58
    8- 63

Many with the typical 98-o weak strike!

I like #5 the best, I think most of these are selling for between $30-50 range, higher if MS64.

1898-o was considered rare until whole bunch of them came out from the mint vaults in 1962.

First off, they are all very nice coins. On the first one I would say an Au53/55. While the coin has nice luster, the marks on the cheek and neck bring the grade down a lot (IMO).
The rest are solid MS60’s. They have varying degrees of marks on the cheek/chin/neck (which lowers the value for me) but still have a lot of detail and mint luster, and some nice toning.
I don’t think any would grade higher than 63, and that would be generous.
Overall, I think you have some nice coins that rate a high AU low MS.

Quicknight...thank you for your assessment. I agree that the marks on some of the coins are a bit distracting and keep those coins below choice. However, I don't believe any of these are circulated or below MS60. There might be rub indicative of rubbing up against other coins in a bag but not wear.

I love the Morgan dollar, the one coin that I collect more than others. While I am in no way an expert, I can only say how I would grade if I was considering buying. The lack of detail over the ear keeps me from calling these high than a 63. 2 might make a 65 and 8 a 63. There are a lot of people that have more experience here and I look forward to seeing what they say.
