I'm a member of several forums. One is especially good with regard to educating members about counterfeit detection. I'd like to see CT develop a similar reputation. I know just a little and will be adding to this discussion shortly.

NOTE: The purpose of this thread is not to post your pretty 8 R coins. Please post them in your own discussion. Hopefully, this thread will become a place showing deceptive counterfeits that will be marked as such. Then it would be very helpful to see a few genuine examples marked as such for comparison.

Suspicious coins are WELCOME. Authentication from images is not always reliable.

This is definitely fake. The weight is wrong and the metal looks weird, among other things. I bought this when I was just starting collecting and didn't know what I was doing. 1879 mexico 8 reales fake.jpg

I'd love to see this thread get some traction, so, OK, here is one I bought because of the neat date. I know it's cleaned. But is it real? I know my pictures are sorry. Hopefully they are something you can work with.

Here's one. I don't know much about them. It doesn't sound or feel like a dime/silver. Why counterfeit these? Was it financially equitable back in 1897? Maybe?

DELETED! Wrong coin for this thread. Sorry!

I am delighted to see this thread. A little while ago I went to a local coin store to sell these coins, coins which I have had for a few years but as my main field is now ancients I no longer have any need for these four coins. They were in a batch and the dealer bought some others, but he was pretty certain these were not genuine. None of the four is magnetic. I knew that long ago as I carry a magnet when purchasing to check for cupro-nickel fakes. The first 8 reales, dated 1735 weighs only 23.7 grams and should weigh about 27 grams. That was the tip off something was wrong here . The second 8 reales dated 1774 was also light at 25.9 but what convinced the dealer it was not genuine was the date, which seems to have been pressed into the coin, or so he observed. The two reales, dated 1742 is just light at 6.1 grams and should weigh 6.7 grams. The dealer told me that the Spanish were very accurate with the weights of their coins and it was unlikely they were genuine, He declined to buy them. The 1640 "Dog Dollar" from the Netherlands weighs 23.1 grams and it should weigh about 27.6 grams of .75 fineness silver. There does seem to be a chunk out of the coin so that might explain the lighter weight. Maybe. IMG_1268[3144]possible obv fakes.jpg IMG_1269[3136]possible fakes rev.jpg

I post these here so that viewers can be aware of what might be fakes and perhaps they would care to makes comments on them

Can a moderator move this or add this to the US coin forum?

Why would a thread about 8 R's be in US coins?

Because the eight Reales was the basis of accounting in most of the Colonies, the unit of account for US Continental currency, the basis of the dollar coin (weight and fineness of silver of the eight Reales) and the equal of the US dollar as legal tender until the year 1857. In early America the average citizen handled far more 8 Reales coins that US silver dollars.

Here's a batch of fake Mexican coins, mostly 8 Reales. I know the pics stink so when I get a chance I'll go through them and post of decent pics the the neat ones. I've had these for at least 20 years so I doubt they're recent China crap. Regards, Mike

    26.4 grams on the 1776.

    Sorry for the slow response.

Sorry but no. It's right where it should be. And yeah I understand your point but that doesn't change anything because only a few of the 8 types of reales coins were used in the US while many other types were not. And this thread applies to all of them.

OK, ah reckon I may as well add one here. It is the one and only counterfeit coin I ever bought !

So how and why could I buy a counterfeit ? The why is easy, because I wanted it due to my old and personal connection to these particular coins. The how, well I bought it in person, and from a source where I knew I could never return it. But no easy way to say it, it fooled me.

So now you guys, and that includes you too Mike @Insider , tell me how to tell it's a counterfeit.

    Doug,

    I need better images.

Here is a batch of counterfeits I bought recently for $8 @. I'd like to throw a few on the FL beach one morning and watch the fun!:troll:

I'll be posting magnified images soon and pointing out the defects. These are not as deceptive as Doug's must be. IMG_3156.JPG

I would like to contribute Bob Gurney's list of 20 characteristic features of 8 reales to examine for evidence of forgery, however I'll have to type it up from my copy of his book.

More than half of these points relate to the edge so please add photos of the edge to your submissions.
