hey everyone just got back from my trip and only picked up one coin while i was away i intended to visit the shop near the royal british musuem but it was sunday so it was closed when i arrived in london :S but this is the one i picked up in a small shop in venice italy a few blocks from the piaza du st marco (excuse my spelling on that lol) i appologize for the size its not letting me crop the pictures in photobucket right now and the quality isn;t the greatest to show all the details any comments or additional info about this coins value, ruler, condition would be nice as none of the coins had a grading it was rather fun looking through the older gentlemans books for this
Need a larger pic LOL wish you had let me know that you were in London, If you had been there on A saterday I could have taken you to a neat little coin fair under Charing Cross rail station :smile
yeah i appologize i didn't have n exact date because we were trying to decide when to leave barcelona and we didn't get into gatwick till like 4ish on the sat but i did find the one u mentioned near the museum very hard to miss lol big coin logo right out front as u walk past and yeah I'll do a lil work and try and scan the coin a little better if anyone has any tips for that it be much appreciated :smile
The coin is an antoninianus of Gordian III. Attribution would be as follows (maybe not exact but this is the type, I cant see the coin well): Gordian III AR Antoninianus. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped bust right / ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma, helmeted and seated left on shield, holding Victory & spear. RIC 38, RSC 312. and here is a bit of info on the ruler: http://www.cachecoins.org/gordianiii.htm
ah thank you I had a hard time reading the italian and the man in the shop spoke very little english so its nice to know a little more about this new piece
http://dougsmith.ancients.info/feac53gor.html for anyone else interested in him i found this additional info on one of the pages linked to cointalk
i'd love to see an enlarged picture of both sides of the coin. gordian's antoniniani aren't uncommon, but the pics you've posted look a little "soft," and since you bought them as a tourist overseas, i'd worry about their authenticity a bit. any chance we can get better photos to eyeball? v.
beauful coin... It is the same one in my avatar: gordian III, RIC38 it looks to be a VF+, maybe even an EF I got mine for $35, so if you paid no more than $45( because it looks to be little nicer than mine) for yours then you did good stainless
I'm working on the pics and they should be up in a few moments I did the new pics with my digital camera but it isn't the greatest but should be alot clearer then my scanner
