Met some great CTers at the FUN show the last couple days. Always nice to talk in person with folks on this site. Bought this one at the show today but can't seem to find it in my searches. It's an open-door type camp gate from Rome for Constantine II. Just looking for the RIC reference for it. A little help would be much appreciated.
I think I found something... but what I found has it as not listed in RIC... Constantine II A.D. 318- 319 19x20mm 3.2gm CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. VIRTV-S AVGG; camp gate with four turrets and no doors; P-R across fields. in ex. RP RIC VII Rome -- unlisted-- should come after 189 Found at http://www.constantinethegreatcoins.com/Rulers/Constantine_II/ Its the third entry under Rome...
Good question. Most campgates of the PROVIDENTIAE type don't have any doors. I don't know why open doors were included on the contemporaneous VIRTVS campgates--there are even some with closed campgates, but those are very rare--unless they were intended to depict something different. Perhaps the PROVENDENTIAE coins are actually city gates? It's a question that has been debated for a long time and will most likely continue to be.
Thanks all. The identification was much appreciated. Long days at the show and my attention span starts to shrink. Just thought I'd throw in a pic of another open door gate I found at the show, this one of his dad and struck at Arles.
@Brian Bucklan.......Must say lovely quality coins...Nice surfaces and great detail. I collect Licinius Campgates but they dont have the variety you can find with these Cons types. Congrats Paul
