Is this a Dutch colonial coin? I think the lions with the sheild is a dutch thing, but I suppose I'm not sure. What is the deal with the authenticity of this coin? Happened to find it in a baggie I had in my room, probably couldn't ID it a few years ago.

Only sales I can find for it are on Etsy.com, so I just ignored those. :)

VOC is the Dutch abbreviation for the Dutch East India Company. It would be modern-day Indonesia and thereabouts.

@evan, it's an original duit (1/8 silver stuiver) coin from the VOC, or Dutch East India Company, with the arms of the city of Utrecht on it (the oldest city in the Netherlands). A common copper coin, not rare or valuable, but Interesting History.

The 1790 Utrecht Duit was restruck with a star mintmark (above the VOC balemark) in the 1830's to alleviate a shortage of small coin in the Indies. 1835-37 if I remember correctly off the top of my head.

Very nice, my second ever colonial coin was one of those.
