New Nero tetradrachm from Alexandria

    Wow, that is a beauty Al. There must have been some skilled forgers in Alexandria, the galley is very impressive.

    Here's sestertius that I purchased in Besançon, France in 1992. I remember the little coin and stamp shop, tended by an elderly lady, who scarcely spoke a word of English. Now, I took three years of French, which meant that I scarcely could speak French.

    Anyways, she had mostly stamps and only a few coins, this sestertius among them. As these coins go it is in the average range, with a decent strike but also with pretty rough surfaces. Still, it is a coin that reminds me of that trip in 92, as we circumnavigated France in our rented Renault.

    Reverse: PΛCE P R TERRΛ MΛRIQ PΛRTΛ IΛNVM CLVSIT, S C across field, Temple of Janus with latticed windows to left and garland hung across closed double doors to the right.
