I buy weird stuff sometimes because I find it interested. The flip side I'm often left with unanswered questions. Recently I purchased 6 Morgan dollars that were given out by Anheuser-Busch in the 1960's as service anniversary awards. On the reverse they're all stickered same as the one shown below, with dates from 1963 to 1967. A few have neat toning, the 1904 looks really nice (maybe XF45+?). I have a couple of questions for the folks here:

    1) One of the mysteries of these is I can read the mint mark (obviously) because they're stickered over. Would the draw of knowing the mintmark cause you guys to take the stickers off? I'm confident a water soak and then some acetone with do the trick. The years of the Morgan's are 1881 (this one is an 'O', the sticker actually fell off this morning when I was examining them), 1882, 1883, 1884, 1889 and 1904.

    2) Tied to the 'should I take the stickers off' question, I assume there is some value in them due to the stickers? Maybe.... I see a hand listed on eBay for ~$40-60 but I haven't found a record of any selling so maybe not. I'm in to them for $13.25 apiece so I'm not going to get hurt either way, really just trying to educate myself more than anything.

Thanks for looking and any thoughts. IMG_4732.JPG IMG_4733.JPG IMG_4734.JPG IMG_4735.JPG

Nice looking coins. Some folks do chase coins with stickers, I don't have any but I think they are interesting. Maybe the VAM guys could determine the mint from the obverse?

    If that’s an 84 or 04-s it’s worth it

Cliff Mishler of Numismatic News fame loves these type of numismatics. It is a conundrum though as they can, in certain circumstance add value but only to the right people looking for this particular type. As @longshot says, maybe someone can identify by VAM type.

You might try contacting groups/forums for brewery/beer collectors and see what interest they might have. Just a thought.

Good idea. I just searched for a club that might work and sent the guy a message. Will be interesting to see what h says.

It easily could be. It’s circulated though not heavily. 84-s is not rare until it’s high grade it could be an 84 cc too. There’s a 2 in 4 chance it’s one or the other

I... don't think probability works that way...

Cazkaboom One for all, all for me.

Are the stickers thick? I'm thinking you can maybe run something like a paperclip over where the MM area is and see if you can determine it that way.

I had a similar thought. Unfortunately the sticked are extremely thick, multi layered things. They're ~51-56 years old as well. I can't tell at all the mintmark through the sticker.

The sticker came off the 1883 (I accidentally listed it as an 1881 in the original post). It's a New Orleans coin. So far I've been unable to get the gunk off the reverse. I soaked in acetone for a couple of hours, nothing. Sat in warm soapy water overnight and there's no apparent improvement. I guess I'll leave it in the water for another couple of days, then back to acetone. Any thoughts if those two don't do it?

Certainly try xylene if you've got any on hand.

No to a paper clip! If that is a CC and you scratch you will have a problem coin that can't be repaired. Perhaps if you had some thin onion paper type of paper you could lightly take a soft lead pencil and "very carefully" move the pencil across the area and come up with something. Over the years the sticker may have gotten some air behind it so you might try pressing down on the sticker beforehand.

It might be worth a shot at contacting Human Resources at Anhueser Bush and see what information they have on these, if any. Possibly ask how many of these were issued that year and to whom. It might be an enlightening historical adventure. I found an old brass barrel bung (1930's) once metal detecting and it had enough info on it that I was able to contact the company and got a nice message giving me the date they were used and an invitation to visit the factory and have lunch with the owner.

I have a few half dollars. I think @dwhiz has a few stickers dollars.

The stickers do add a small premium, but I'd only keep them if you eliminated the possibility of a valuable mint mark hiding under them.

Depending on the type of glue that was used, you may be able to remove the stickers non-destructively. Would a long stay in a sealed glass tupperware in a dry, warm place (like a car glovebox or well lit windowsill) do any harm? Once the glue completely dries, the stickers could lose their adhesion and just fall off like the one you observed.

My gut tells me they're a mix of New Orleans and Philly Mint Morgans! That said its definately an awesome set! Nice, circulated Morgans!
