Interesting website for fakes and stolen coins

This website (looks like it is based in France) allows collectors to create online collections, i.e. to create an online archive of their own collection.
Interestingly, it includes a section for fake coins (I think one cannot see enough fakes to keep abreast with new fakes), and it includes a section for stolen coins, i.e. coins stolen in burglaries, or those that got "lost" in the mail. I think the site is just developing, but it could be quite useful in future:

I would find this site a great deal more worthwhile if the distinction between real and fake coins were made more clear and include comments on how the coin was determined to be fake. For example, rather than saying 'fake' it should say 'cast', 'struck from copy dies', 'exact duplicate of coins known', 'Lippinoff', 'Slavey', 'tooled from another type' --- whatever is appropriate.

Agreed, more information would be useful. However, I think as a quick reference, i.e. to confirm suspicion or to familiarize oneself with fake coin styles it is still useful. I just wish more material would be added to that site.

The other thing is the stolen and lost coins database. I think something like this, if it is maintained well, should be useful to dealers, potential buyers and of course for the collectors who have suffered a loss.

As I know the people developping and maintaining Colleconline, I will point them to the discussion here so they can elaborate and/or take into account remarks and suggestions

    Hello,

I am the creator of CollecOnline, thank you for your interest in our website and for your valuable feedbacks.

Briefly introducing myself, I am a Roman Coins collector, specialize in rare busts, late imperial coins (siliqua…) and brockage coins. I am also a computer engineer which led me to develop a collection management solution in the past 5 years with the help of a friend, CollecOnline.

To sum-up, CollecOnline allows you to:
    • Inventorize your collection (pictures, description…)
    • Manage your purchase information (invoice, certificate, estimation…)
    • Share your objects with your network or public, or keep it private
    • Print PDF catalogs of your collections, extract your data on Excel

I wanted to give you the swift introduction in order to explain that we fully own and control our solution, and that we can make it evolve at will. As we are currently preparing a new release in a month from now, already 200 days of work on it and still counting, we are eager to hear your suggestions.

In addition to managing your own collections, we developed the system of “Groups” that you mention in a previous message. This groups allow several members to manage together a project page associated to their own database. This is how “Fakecoins” and “Stolen coins” work.

Even though I participated in the recent creation of “Stolen coins”, I am searching for people who would be interested in contributing and growing this public utility project. Indeed, it is nice to know that a coin still belongs to its owner if it is found 10 years later, and that the owner can prove his ownership (which is what we want to do with this database). Therefore, it is possible for all collectors who are interested in this project to request membership in order to contribute to the completion of the database.

Thank you for reading, feel free if you have any questions.

I checked it out—great site! I have not signed up yet but I did bookmark it so I can look at it again. I was stumped by the box on the application page that says “Collection Theme” I couldn’t decide which collection I would like to feature  I have several totally unrelated collections such as Judaean coins, Starbucks coffee bag stickers, French military medals, retro gas station buttons, NASA Space Shuttle pins, and French Foreign Legion badges to name a few.

Thanks for the comment. The field “Collection Theme” is not really important during the registration. It helps us to study the behavior of new members. You are free to enter what you want in this field.

Awesome, and I just noticed you’re in France. Thank you, @Tejas for mentioning that in his original post. When I sign up, I’ll definitely post my French military artifacts. I’d love to see the collections of some European members. Welcome to the Ancients Forum @Nemesis !

Thank you for the welcoming. Especially do not hesitate to let me know if you do not understand something, if a category is missing or if a term in English is not good.

I will show you part of my collection from my collection of ancient coins later :)
