No offense intended Mike but can you loan me some money so I can buy these all day? We could be gazillionaires!
The problem is not money, Clembo. It is finding these coins to begin with, and I suspect you are underestimating how hard they are to find. To wit, I've been looking for a nice circulated example for TWO AND A HALF YEARS. I've found two -- that's right, two. Actually, I found a third one, but it was priced/graded too high for me to justify. Here's the coin it replaced, which cost me $175 when I purchased it in January 2006 from Butternut (Steve Ellsworth): Here's how these coins typically look (and remember these are the better coins that COULD be slabbed): http://coins.ha.com/common/search_results.php?Ne=304&Ntt=1835&Ntk=SI_Titles&N=51+790+231+357 As another example, EBAY had a total of 10 bust quarters listed, and not a single one was nice: http://coins.shop.ebay.com/items/Bu...sQ2dPaperQ2dMoneyQQ_pcatsZ11116QQ_sacatZ11963 So look around, and let me know how many circulated, original-looking, eye-appealing, problem-free examples in F to XF you find, and I'll float you. However, I don't expect that you'll find many, and when you do, you'll notice how expensive they are -- and I suspect we'll fall just a bit short of gazillionaires.
Where can you buy problem-free VF Bust Quarters all day? These are pretty tough coins, much tougher than early halves.
Boy are you right about that. I started looking at all bust coinage on ebay and so far have found only 1 half dime to bid on. I am sure if I had the coins in hand I might have bought a couple, but not taking a chance on the bay. Talking to the people down at the coin shop they basically said that the smaller the coin gets the hard it is to find, the hard it is to find in good shape and the more costly it will be based off the grade. They had a 1834(or maybe 6) that had VF35/XF40 details - decent color - but a old scratch down lady liberty. It was listed around 350 and they told me it will sell on the details alone.
Have you ever actually read the PCGS grading standards spock ? If you had you'd understand why they are so inconsistent with their grades. They list a single description for the grades VF20 to VF35 and expect you, and their graders, to decide the grade of a given based on that. Kinda leaves a lot of room for error don't ya think ?
Interesting views on the quarter and smaller denominations guys. NO, I don't see them all day. We did have a pretty nice one walk in last week though. Yes, most are cleaned but I don't see how PCGS or any other service can bump the grade just because it's original. I can actually see them slabbing a coin that has had an old cleaning but if the detail is not there then it doesn't merit a higher grade IMHO. I graded the coin on ANA standards and nothing else. Hence my F12 to 15 on a good day. Hindsight makes me see the reverse at VF20 or so but the obverse is F12. Scarcity should raise the value of the grade not the number assigned when grading. Not knocking the coin though. It is a lovely coin. clembo
I tend to agree with you, but remember PCGS market grades, not technical grades. Said another way, they value coins. Said yet another way, they rank coins. They don't grade technically, per-se. All IMHO.
My sentiments exactly Clembo! If you noticed, I graded that coin F12 also for the very reasons you stated.
