I really appreciate all the responses/input.

As promised - the pics. As you can see - it's graded PCGS XF40 CAC (just one opinion). As is probably obvious to most, I bought this from DLRC recently. I paid a ~10% premium over recent auction prices and am taking a bit of a risk that it looks better in hand. If it doesn'tt, then I have an XF that I paid ~$40 too much for and lesson learned.

I have suspicions that it may have been cleaned and re-toned, but am hoping it's market acceptable. I have been collecting barber dimes in XF - XF+ for about a year and haven't seen this 'look' yet which was a big reason I picked it up. I have also had good experiences buying from DLRC - I typically like 9/10 coins I buy from DLRC.

I agree with the luster comment by green18 and don't think this would grade AU53 or better under any circumstances. I don't think dirt around the devices indicates cleaning - IMHO, dirt tends to cling to the edge of the devices on a lot of VF-XF barbers. However, I do think the color potentially indicates a prior cleaning. 10c 1897-O Rev Slab.jpg 10c 1897-O Slab.jpg
