Everyone, I have been searching several rolls of 2000P cents and have come across a few like the one attached. There is a extremely shiny piece on the right of the reverse. I'm just needing some determining what's going on with these coins.
Hiya @swerths Maybe it is my eyes, but i'm having difficulty seeing into that area clearly. And can we see the obverse? Thanks
looks like partially polished die from die deterioration. You can see a ridge ring starting and the old nearly split plating problems on top of the outer letters. You can also see striking problems above AMERICA including the inside rim - especially the ERICA (the I looks like a T) .. so I would guess they were trying to fix a problem with that die. What does the obverse look like ? Remember, quantity not quality is their objective for commerce produced coins.
maybe they polished the die from feeder finger damage ?? if you look at the lower part of those last 2 columns you'll see it is nicely though a fading polish from right to left with the majority of course to the right of the building. of course, we were not there ... @Fred Weinberg might take a better guess ...
I think you guys have the right diagnosis. I've seen this before, mostly on post Westward Expansion Jefferson nickels (i.e., 2006 forward). Like the feeder fingers polish a section of the die.
This is an interesting thread. and I'm learning a lot! Is that the effect of a die loaded with grease around the lips of our former POTUS?
