What is your "Cut off" date when collecting coins? What I mean by this is, what year is the year that you keep the coins, and what year is the year that you spend them?

For me, the date is 1979. Basically anything from the 70's and back I keep. Unless it is in bad condition, then I spend it. But If I come across a coin that is in really great condidtion thats past my cut off date, then I will keep it.

I dont know a lot about coins and specific dates being worth specific amounts... If I come across anything 1959 or before I would say I would keep it.

Why so late? Its tough to find coins from the 60's as it is. Thats why I keep anything from the 70's and back, to try and stay ahead of whats hard to find.

As for pulling coins out of circulation, I tend to keep anything from the 60s on back...Joe has picked up this habit as well. He now keeps a separate stash of his birthyear coins (1997). I told him when he's my age he'll be happy about that as I have a hard time finding my birthyear anymore. He's way ahead of the game :)

Im not a big collector... YET. So I dont know a lot of coins that are worth anything. I am going to start coin sets for my daughter, when that gets into full swing I will be looking for certain dates. I guess I have it in my mind that I come across 60s coins all the time, so not worth my space to keep them.

Just pulled the coins out of my pocket from lunch 2 out of 6 are 60s coins:
    1964 Jefferson Nickel
    1965 Washington Quarter

When I see 50s coin, that is rare to me. Thats why that is my date.

What a great Idea. I will be starting a 2004 collection for my daughter now.

Bobby-Another fun collection that you can start for her is world bullion dated for her birthyear. I've got several pieces stashed away for Joe that he doesn't even know about. Pandas, Kooks, Kangaroos, Libertads, etc...all dated 1997. They are relatively easy to pick up and inexpensive if you stick to silver, but they sure make a pretty little treasure chest for him to find someday after his Dad & I are long gone.

1964 and older for dimes, quarters. 1958 and older for pennies. I'll look at everything else I get though

I save 'em all. I pull out errors, then sort the rest by date/mm and roll them up. In the process, I also learned not to store them in the attic.

Simple. If it's silver, gold, odd, unique, broken, toned, or big and heavy I keep it. :)

I guess I'm the only one that actually just keeps the coins from a certain decade on, so that they will be worth more someday?

You know I'm just messing with you Robin. I tried to check your birthday on your profile, but you don't list your birth year. Actually we are probably about the same age.

Anyway back to the question. I keep anything before '64, I have been finding a lot of 63 / 64 nickels in change lately, and more to date stuff that is in AU + condition which I will pass to my children someday.

No worries Larry, you gave me the best laugh I'd had all day ;)

CoinJoe...Sounds to me like several people keep anything from silver on back. Ways of collecting is a varied as the people that do it. IMO, that's one of the best parts about this hobby :)
