This will be my dumbest CT post yet, and hopefully ever....

I bought a lot of Canadian commemorative dollar coins from 1971-1988 yesterday. I believe they’re all 50% silver. One question though, there’s a 1972 in there with the standard voyager reverse. I saw one link that said they made 50% silver version and another link that said they did not. Can some one point me in the right direction??? Thanks.

The business strikes after 1968 are nickel. Many of the Proof dollars are 50% silver. There is a weight difference if you can't recognize the proof strike, but I don't have the values handy

Ha ha. This confirms that I’m an idiot. It never occurred to me that the silver and non-sliver version are substantially different size and weights. I just defaulted to a ‘67 dime in 50% or 80% are generally too close to each other to weigh out a difference. Not so on a dollar sized coin (but I bet the 4mm difference in diameter is the real giveaway).

On the strike they all look proof to me but I don’t have any business strikes to compare them against. Several of them have extremely strong cameos and are really nice.

    Thanks Hoopster!

This actually confirms the ‘72 is silver even though it’s at home and i’m At work. The ‘72 is the same diameter as all of the other dollars. Thanks.

There are no dumb questions for coins. Better to always ask than be sorry later. That is what this forum is for. To learn. Canadian coins are awesome. I am collecting the caribou quarters 1937-1967 and the 50 cent pieces from 1937-1967 toned.

I also picked up a couple of CAD halves exactly because of their toning. I’ll try to get some pic’s in the next day or two.

Numista is usually my go to for foreign coin specs but I found some conflicting info and was looking for confirmation. Thanks.

Yup, those are them. I got all every one from 1971-1988 minus the 1977 I think, plus doubles on ‘87, ‘88 and one other. Paid $7 each for them which seems like a good deal based on eBay sold prices.

Numista is usually my go to for foreign coins as well.

But for Canadian coins I use this site.
