I'll start it off. They're both pretty common dates. But they both look in pretty good shape. If, on closer examination, they look cleaned, dipped, altered, or, euphemistically, conserved, restored, that's going to detract from the value. All I can tell from these pics is, the fields look very clean on both, and the 1880-O has some bag blemishes, and a little contact mark or scratch, on the cheek. Just hang in there for your grades/values, and I'm sure a more exacting analysis/evaluation.

the dealer wants $50.25 for each but says that he will give me discount if I purchase both.......I'm not sure bout the valuation but I'm willing to pay 5-10% premium on real value to get my first morgan.........still I think the price is too steep......so wanna confirm before I go ahead.....

I was just going to edit what I said, I meant 1883-O. Same opinion, though. Wait for more specifics, if you can, especially since you're thinking in terms of tight %-ages. They'll be here soon. Sometimes all it takes is somebody to kick the thread off so the rest have somebody to disagree with. :D

Let me just edit, here, to add, I think $50.25/ea, w/a marginal discount, is a reasonable price, provided these aren't cleaned, as that's basically MS-63 money, and these grades may even top that, as the coins look that problem-free to me...

Pass on both, the first coin is damaged and neither of them is unc. They are worth at best $20 each.

To be honest I don't know who does and doesn't. But it should be pretty easy to send them an email and find out.

I agree and would not be suprised if both have not been cleaned.

You can get these all day long on Ebay for under $20 each.

    I agree with Doug.

    Also, consider finding another dealer.

    I say VF-30 for the 1883-O and XF 40 for the 86,
Just bullion value IMO but if you dont have those they are great to have as hole fillers until you find a better one

I checked with the coin dealer and told him bout an expert friend of mine have valued these at $20 but he wont budge. I'll look for morgans somewhere else. Made a few purchases this week though for my commonwealth type set....now almost broke.....can't afford any more purchases till next month...lolz..

Forget it! For that price you could purchase the same coins slabbed and graded MS-64 by NGC. And then you would know that you are indeed getting problem free BU coins that can be resold for what you paid.

Just curious what this dealer says these grades are. You omitted that part. Or were these just sitting in a cigar box in the store, and that's how this, uh, "dealer" does business?

Ha ha :mouth:.....He is no professional dealer....He got no idea bout grades......Just a local guy who sells coins through ebay and shop.....I had made many cheap additions of valuable coins to my collection thanks to his lack of knowledge....when I asked why such inflated morgan rates....he replied that he had seen morgans of similar dates sold for that price in ebay.....now I can make him understand bout grades but I don't wanna do that:D and jepordise my future transactions....
