    so reading more, these are kind of like tokens minted locally during and just after WWI to facilitate trade.

    There are numerous varieties of notgeld. Some are made in both zinc and iron, so checking with a magnet helps. This looks like a common variety and it has condition issues, but Zippy Kitty borrowed my reference book to attribute a few pieces, so I can't confirm it for a few days a few days.     It is not unusual that a given date and denomination notgeld is struck in multiple metals. Frequently, both iron and zinc examples exist as do other medals.
