What is new is the how much counterfeit inventory is now flooding the market. It started in drips a few years ago and now it's a flood. That is what is new. I didn't just discover counterfeits, what I discovered is the flood of them which wasn't a discovery as much as a willingness to believe all the evidence, article after article, loads of coin dealers complaining about how prevalent the problem has become, etc. I always dismissed counterfeits as a minor problem but that has changed. It's a flood, a lucrative business model targeting coin values large and small including graded coins, and it's grown to be a big problem for everyone in the hobby. Saying over and over again that it's nothing new does not change all the evidence that Chinese Counterfeits are now flooding the market. That is what is new. Denying it does not change the evidence. This is the last I am answering your repeated statements of "It's not true" despite all the evidence posted to the contrary.
There's nothing new about that. It's always been there. They have been doing this for years and years and years. Not to mention coins have been counterfeited for as long as there have been coins.
As more fakes are made, it's only fair to say there are more now than before. Unless all the older ones are destroyed as new ones are produced, it only makes sense that the population is indeed increasing. Maybe not to mass hysteria volume, but one should be careful. And yes, buy them graded.
It HELPS, but isn't perfect. Most if not all of the fake slabs have legitimate numbers, so you have to compare the coin in the slab to the pictures on the TPG website. Problems, the vast majority of the coins on the PCGS site have no images. NGC has a LOT more but they only go back about 12 years, so any slabs older than that do not have images. The images on NGC are not always that good for actually making comparisons of the coin and the image. For many years they were more concerned about making the image of the slab look good and not making sure the coin was easily visible. I believe the plan is to have that happen in 2021. I expect the Chinese will have it copied by 2022.
Sad but probably all too true! Do you know if they've duplicated the Canadian DNA machines yet and the micro-engraving with the detection?
I don't know if they have defeated it, but if I understand what it actually is I don't think it would be too difficult to do so. And I wouldn't bother duplicating the DNA machine, all they have to do is take high resolution images of the "DNA" maple leaf and then use a laser to recreate it on their counterfeits. Buy, scan, and resell 1,000 ML and you now have a database of 1,000 different registered ML's that your can reproduce on your fakes.
BEWARE OF CHINESE FAKE GOLD flooding the market EBAY is the main selling venue, ungraded and even slabbed the CHINESE are excellent at it even fooling seasoned Gold experts. Only buy through dealers with the latest technology. The CHINESE are even flooding the market with silver fakes particularly Standing Liberty Quarters, You will see so many MS state Standing Liberty Quarters at around low selling points , The CHINESE make massive profits off these fakes and the sellers on EBAY
As far as any gold goes, be reeeaaalllll picky about who you buy from. In my view that excludes every seller on eBay other than APMEX etc. which also have an eBay presence.
Except that they're getting better at faking slabs too. The one protection you have is when the TPGs have pictures that go with the certifications, so you can make sure the coin matches the picture. Trouble is, they don't all have pictures. But they're moving towards that.
Well, like with Fentanyl and the current trade negotations, maybe our trade negotiators will get China to clamp down on this stuff. Ordinary citizens should not have printing and stamping presses that do this sort of stuff. China wouldn't like it we flooed their markets with fake Pandas.
Like I said...a super-wealthy coin collector could insure his legacy past modernity by donating some $$$ to creating a photographic and RFID or NFC database of all current and past graded coins. Make a bigger post-death impression than donating a few more wings to museums.
Chinese fake Gold Coins graded and ungraded have flooded Ebay. Silver coins also in particular Standing Liberty Quarters. Buyers Beware.
