I think ANACS undergraded this piece by at least 5, maybe up 15 points. I'll let you grade it, and then I'll share ANACS grade.

I would grade it AU50 and say it is a very nice coin.

Well AU-50 would be very generous, and a very expensive coin!

I feel it is VF-30 , VF-35 max. There's no way it can be XF-40.

Well - in all fairness you do have the coin. What I see in the picture is very little wear across the chest, head and knees. Then on the reverse a slight touch of wear across the breast, shield and lower leg. Now with the dark pictures they could be hiding additional wear which I do not see. So throw in a weak strike and ta-da - AU50. Which meant that ANACs graded the coin VF35 - which I could buy, but not VF20 or VF25.

I'd grade the coin XF 40 and suspect ANACS did too.

Keep in mind the TPGs "market grade" coins -- sometimes net grading a coin downward for some perceived issue.

Often when you see a coin and think this coin must be undergraded, you often are "missing" someting the TPG caught and net graded as a result.

My numismatic antenna always go on alert when I see a coin that seem obviously undergraded.

Did you see the part where they said undergraded and then proceeded to say it was VF30 to VF35 in their opinion? Then that means ANACS graded it VF20 to VF25. So what else could we be missing?

Just like your pictures the darkness may very well be hiding the wear on the obverse and reverse. It was so much easier to see on the PCGS picture you posted showing the dove grey.

I'm gonna go with VF-35. WAY too much wear for AU and a bit too much for EF too.

I think the obv kills that coin - it looks VF25/30 while the rev looks VF35.

ANACS graded this coin VF-20. No problems noted on the holder, and it is a choice original coin.

    I think it's VF-30 or VF-35. VF-20 is a joke I think.

No, I didn't. I don't read the responses to the thread before guessing so I'm not swayed by anyone else's opinion. I just look at the pics and quick reply, and in many cases (like this one) it makes me look foolish. :)

    Take care....Mike

p.s. that coin has way too much luster to be graded VF-20, IMO.

Also, the coin is toned quite a bit, a bit more on the obverse. That is not a bad thing on a VF coin, and is preferred. I don't have a professional picture setup, so this is the best I can do.

XF-40? So they grade it VF-35?

As far off as I was I still can't believe they only graded in VF20.

I would be happy to buy that as a 20.

I was thinking a 35 coin, 40 max. Calling it a 20 is silly. I'd like to buy coins that look like that at 20 money.
