Hi there! I'm new to the forum and relatively new to ancient coin collecting too, so this is my first post. I recently picked up an Athenian tetradrachm and just wondered what people's thoughts are on its authenticity? Weight: 17.27g Diameter: 24mm Thanks in advance for any help!
It's a bit worn so its not so easy to draw conclusions from a photo. Having said that, I don't see anything suspicious. There's a countermark next to the ethnic. I hope you didn't pay more than 200$ for it.
Thanks for the help! That's essentially how much I paid for it, so good to know I didn't massively over pay
I also don't see anything wrong. Given that the edge looks okay, I would say your ~$200 was well spent on a decent coin with great eye appeal. You have Athena's nose on flan and no test cuts (the tiny countermark doesn't bother me), and no serious and obvious issues I can find, just good honest wear.
I must be looking in the wrong places. I would have a hard time finding an authentic tet in that condition for $200, even with the increased numbers on the market. But I don't actively search for that coin. Still, I would suspect that coin to go for $300 or more.
