Unofficial name of this medal („Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42“): "For frozen meat" or "For frozen a...s". Russian winter of 1941/42 was very cold. A lot of fascists frozen near Moscow. Hitler was a fool. He wasn 't supposed to get involved with us. We were born and live in the cold. It 's our natural habitat. And the Germans couldn 't stand our climate.

Thanks for contributing to this thread! @panzerman , @Siberian Man , @daveydempsey , & @Double Die . Your collections are amazing—even more so because the recipients of the medals that you posted are family members. It would have been fascinating to have been able to talk with them in person. Any participant who survived these conflicts would have been a walking miracle. My grandfather was a WWI veteran who survived some horrific experiences including being mustard gassed. He was in a military hospital in France for months before he was sent back to the U.S. to spend many more months in the hospital.
Nice medals. I don't think any nation came even close to the beauty and quality of the French Great War medals. So sad that these had to be made and issued twice.

It’s great to hear from other CoinTalk members who share an interest in Numismatic militaria! Maybe in time—the Owner/Webmaster of CoinTalk would consider creating a Military Numismatics Forum. @Siberian Man , @panzerman , @Double Die , @Seattlite86
