I have this coin I've had for quite a while. I received it as a gift about 15 years ago and just 'found' it again. A local dealer thought it was real (he said some fakes were made and sold as real) but couldn't tell me much else. 1. Is it worth anything? 2. What is it, year, etc.? I'm not sure about numismatic value though I'm sure someone here can help you with that. As jewelry it's quite nice. I like the dolphins.
Yeah it was verified the dolphins and surrounding is gold (not sure what karat) - it is very nice but I just don't wear jewelry as much. And this was a gift from an 'ex' so it's not the wife's favorite :mouth:. So before I sell it I'd like to find out more about it.
Your coin is a 2 reales from Mexico City mint, from the assayer Luis Rodriguez, which dates it 1548-1567. I couldn't say if it is authentic, and if it is I don't know what numismatic value it has as jewelry. The assayer's initial (L) is shown to the right of the coat of arms, looks like an 'I' due to a worn die. Mexico City mint is represented by the M on the left side.
So this would be hard to sell as jewelry? And would it harm the coin to have someone take the gold off?
I would imagine you could easily sell it as jewelry. As for removal, that's what I would do, even though the coin may well have been damaged during the creation process. And I would find out if it was real.
If it is real - would anyone know an approximate value before I went further? Thanks for the quick replies already.
Howdy thelarster - Welcome to the Forum !! acanthite has given you the information as to what it is supposed to be. But I am inclined to think that it is a cast counterfeit - not a genuine coin. Any value it may have would be as a piece of jewelry, not as a coin. And that would be determined strickly by metal content and weight.
