Some ancient coins indicate their denominations. Early Republican denarii have an "X" for ten, but that is not quite the same as actually naming the denomination. Some aureliani from the reform of 274 have "XXI" which apparently gives the silver content (20 parts copper to 1 of silver). Those examples indicate the denomination, but are not as explicit as the next one. Under Nero this type explicitly names its denomination. Thick 19 mm. 6.86 grams. The reverse says "ΔIΔPAXMON" = didrachma around simpulum and lituus.
